Cannot connect to any USB device on my virtual machines

Hallo,

need HELP.

i had 3 virtual machines (1xW2k3 DC and 2xW2k3 as an virtual Cluster) with Virtual Server 1.05 on my Laptop (XP SP2) created.

USB functions great.

Then our IT installs Vista SP1 on my Laptop. OK....no problem i thought...what a great optimism.

On the new installed Laptop i install the new Vmware Server 1.07 and import the old with Virtual Server 1.05 created virtual machines.

But after connecting an USB-Drive i wasn´t able to connect the device in the virtual machine...it was greyed out.

After severel trys to reanimate it i decide to install VMware Server 2.0. But the same Problem. In the Remote Console i can see what type of USB-Drive is connected like "Sandisk USB-Massstorage", but the connect Button is greyed out.

The problem i see is, that on the hostsystem the "VMmware USB-Device"-Driver is not installed and the guest-Systems think that he is installed.

All attempts were in vain to install this driver manually on the Laptop (host-system).

Can anyone help me?

Thanks Juergen

I know this may sounds odd, but when I was out at a library I noticed I couldn't connect to the remote virtual machine. and when I could get back home everything was fine. Then I disabled my wireless network card at home and I got the same error. "error opening the remote virtual machine .... an unexplained error occured"

Any suggesstions?

IPCOP on vmware

Hi guys,

I am trying to install ipcop on my server using vmware.

Ipcop requires 2 Seperate network adapters (red-the modem/internet and green- the network)

On my server i have 1 onboard network controller and then i have a gigabit pci gard in.

Now in network connections they are both there and enabled.

The modem is connected to the onboard one and then network is plugged into the pci one.

Now what i want to know is how do i get these two cards in vmware.

I have tried and fiddled arround abit, i can add to network cards but it dose not work ( i think that vmware is just using the same network card and making two virtual cards)

Is there any was to assign network controller 0 to my onboard and network controller 1 to my pci ?

Thanks

p2v - vm contains hidden network connections

I hope this is the right forum. I'll try to keep this as brief as possible. Please keep in mind that I basically know enough about vmware to be dangerous, but am by no means an expert.

I was asked by a client to set up a somewhat "failover backup". They are a small office with only one 2003 SBS. I found THIS SITE and suggested that we do that. Overall, the method worked pretty well.

However, upon booting up the VM (network adapters disconnected of course), I noticed that the three connections on the original box are named LAN, WAN, and BACKUP...all with static addresses. The three connections in the VM are called Local Area Connection, Local Area Connection 2, and Local Area Connection 3...all with default DHCP settings. When I booted down the original SBS and connected the VM, I could not connect to the network at all. When I went into the connections, renamed them, and assigned the appropriate IP settings, I got a message that a connection already exists with those settings, but is "hidden".

I discussed this with a colleague who had seen this before and told me to check HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\network\(the first key under that), and to remove the incorrect connections. I did this, rebooted, and now 2003 SBS is "stuck" on "preparing network connections".

I'm going to do a new p2v tonight and start over tomorrow, but I thought someone else might have more info before I start again in the morning.

Any suggestions?

Networking question (LDAP)

I have a mail server with zimbra installed on a physical server, and I am now trying to install zimbra on my virtual machine. I've run into an error I've never encountered during installation when dealing with my physical servers. Since the only difference now is that I'm working with a Virtual Machine, are there any networking configurations that might be interferring? I have a bridge setup, and I'm able to resolve my IP and ping the outside world. I am able to FTP and connect through Putty to the Virtual Machine.

I'm running the standard installation of Zimbra, and I run into this message:

"Address unconfigured (**) items or correct ldap configuration"

When

I've installed before, I never had to do anything other than set the

administrator password during the configuration. Why is this coming up

now?

Any ideas why this is coming up? On the Zimbra forums, I was told it's because I don't have an A & MX record, but like I said, I've installed without any problems before on a physical machine.

EDIT: I changed the Hostname and the LDAP master host to match each

other in the zimbra configuration. I had zimbraVM.domain.com for the Hostname, and

zimbravm.domain.com for the LDAP master host, and when I made them both

zimbravm.domain.com (lowercase), it let me proceed with the install.

Firefox 3.6 and vmware remote console doesn't open.

After upgrading to firefox 3.6 I can't open up my virtual machine through the browser.

I downgraded to 3.5 and it worked.

This is the message I get:

Cannot access virtual machine console. The request timed out

The attempt to acquire a valid session ticket for * took longer than expected. If this problem persists, contact your system administrator.

Anyone know how to fix this?

HELP!!! Server 2.x, Server 2003 guest - Install tools, guest hangs on reboot

$

As the title suggests, as soon as I install the vmware tools and reboot, the guest hangs on "Preparing network connections..."

If I let it sit for a long time (30 mins), I'll get a logon prompt, then another 20 mins to get to the desktop.

The guest boots in under 5 min prior to installing Tools.

This is a conversion from a physical box running fine.

I've tried (none work):

- installing tools without a network adapter in the guest

- booting in safe mode after tools

- extracting vmxnet3 driver from esx4 tools

- p2v from source

- cold image using BESR

- new VM, restore BESR backup

- non-destructive repair install after installing tools

- non-destructive repair before installing tools

Quad Core host - disable or enable hyperthreading?

$

0

Dear all,

Thanks for taking the time.  New to the forum and to VMs.  I have read up as much as I can before posting but are not 100% sure of the answer to my question.  I know with old Intel processors, hyperthreading is recommended to be disabled.  On ESX with newer intels (nehalem and newer), the best practise recommends hyperthreading to be enabled.

However, this question is for the free VMware server, which only allows 2 vCPUs per VM.  My quad core xeon 3460 is showing 8 logical CPUs in task manager under windows 2003 R2.  This makes sense since it is 4 cores x 2 hyperthreads = 8 logical CPUs.  So now, if I run a VM and assigned 2 vCPUs to it, am I just using 1 physical core since hypertheading is enabled?  In other words, the 2 hyperthreads in 1 core counts as 2 logical cpus, which are then assigned as 2 vCPUs to the VM.  Is this how I should look at it?

On the other hand, if I disable hyperthreading, then the host will simply has 4 cores (translate to 4 logical cpus since no HT).  Then if I assign 2 vCPU to the same VM, would the VM be using 2 physical cores now?  Would this be more efficient ?

Recap:

option 1) Quad core, HT enabled = 8 logical CPUs.  Assign 2 to a single VM.  Using only 1 core physically.

option 2) Quad core, HT disabled = 4 logical CPUs.  Assign 2 to a single VM. Using 2 cores physically.

Which will give faster performance on the VM?  I am thinking option 2 since the VM will be using 2 cores physically, instead of 2 HTs on a single core in option 1.  Or am I just not looking at this properly?

Thank you again for your time.  Please shine some light to a newbie question.

help with fixing Grain Table

Hi, I am working with a problem vmdk file. The good news is, no snapshots or other complications. The bad news is, I've taken this as far as I know to take it.

I copied the vm to another machine and behavior is exactly the same in both places. Can't start it. Can't add the vmdk to a new machine either. I have seen a few posts where folks know how to snip out the bad bits... but that was not a Windows box. Can it be done here as well?

I reckon this is the relevant bit of the log, but I am happy to post any additional information that may be useful. I will also attach a zip of the log. Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

Hi all,

until last week i had Vmware Server 2.0.2 running perfectly on my Windows 7 64 bit machine. After the last patch day it will not start anymore.

I already deinstalled and reinstalled it, no success.

I went to the firewall and set port 8222 and 8333 completely open.

The i have seen in services.msc that "Vmware Host Agent" is not started. Properties are set to "automatic start". But it will not start. Trying to start it manualy i only get the message it cannot be startet, error code -1. When i look at the system event log, i see an event id 7024 with text "Der Dienst "VMware Host Agent" wurde mit folgendem dienstspezifischem Fehler beendet: %%-1.". Xml-View is:

-

Any suggestions how i can it running again?

Thank you all!

Disabling hgfs mount in Solaris

$

Hi All,

We've just deployed two Solaris 10 VM boxes and have found that the /hgfs (host-guest file system) mount causes problems with our backup software. I'd like to disable this if possible so that our backups can run as normal.

I've done a 'umount /hgfs' and then removed the associated folder but it still comes back. It doesn't exist at all in \etc\vfstab but still re-appears whenever the box is restarted.

Help!

EDIT: Would unticking all of the 'vmware tool' options under 'Inventory -> Virtual Machine -> Edit Settings' make a difference?

Error trying to increase vmdk hard disk capacity "file already exists"

I'm trying to expand a SCSI VMDK on VMware Server 2 build 122956 running on Windows Server 2008 x64 that does not have any snapshots. When I shut down the VM, go to edit Hard Disk 1 (SCSI 0:0) and select Increase Capacity, add space and then hit OK I get the following error:

"Reconfigure Virtual Machine" failed to complete

Operation failed becuase file already exists

The guest is also Windows Server 2008 x64 and I have not been able to find any posts here or elsewhere indicating this error. Any help is much appreciated.

Hi there,

Anybody knows what this error message means:

"msg.vmxaiomgr.retrycontabort.rudeunplug:Operation

on file "
.\PhysicalDrive1" failed.

If the file resides on a remote file system, please make sure your

network connection and the server where this disk resides are

functioning properly. If the file resides on removable media, reattach

the media.

Choose Retry to attempt the operation again.

Choose Abort to terminate this session.

Choose Continue to forward the error to the guest operating system."

I guess it wants to say that there are problems with the disk attached to the guest. It happened before, I checked the disk for errors but none were found.I restarted the guest and after a couple of tries it was back on. Now it happened again.

VMDK recovery / vmware-mount: It is not safe to mount the virtual disk.

Hi,

I'm trying to recover a vmdk from a VMWare Workstation VM which apparently wasn't shutdown cleanly. I'm using vmware-mount to mount it, but all options I tried so far have failed miserably. My main goal is to recover a few small files (5 or so) that are missing from the most recent backup, but vmware-mount does not let me mount the disk. There seems to be no way to force vmware-mount to mount the disk.

Is there a way to force vmware-mount to mount it? Is the disk recoverable at all?

All help is appreciated.

Management via web/viclient failing in 2.0.1 + 2.0.2

I was recently forced to update a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.3 system to have all current updates (yum update).  After performing the system update the VMware Server web management page keeps failing.   I can get logged in but when I client on most any vm guest and try most any operation (like Play/Resume) the management page displays "Loading..." in all th enormal places but never resumes working.  I have to run "/etc/init.d/vmware-mgmt restart" to get it to respond again.  Of course, it only works enough for me to log back in and try one operation.

The guests set to autostart do run and get started.

This problem occurs for multiple guests.  It occurs with VMware Server 2.0.1.  I upgraded to 2.0.2 and have the same problem.

I installed viclient 2.5 from vmware server 2.0.0 and it behaves in a similar manner.  After most any type of operation on a vm guest viclient stops working stating it's lost contact with the server.  At the same time the web mgmt page stops working as well.  A "vmware-mgmt restart" gets viclient going again, but it fails once I perform an operation.

Any suggestions?

Hallo,

Error performing inpage operation

I amn new to vmware server. Got it installed, and created a few vm's. Each vm has it's own static ip address in bridged mode.

We can connect to the server to browser shared folders, install programs, get online etc. All seemed great. We can ping the server with ip or wins names.

We created a few mapped drives like we have on the non virtual machines, and that worked great. Our goal was to run Quickbooks on these virtual machines. We have an older version that doesnt work with W7, and we are not buying new qb licenses just to get the never version.

Now to what doesnt work;

We mapped the qb folder as usual, and qb even loads, for a minute. Then it gets disconnected. Sometimes it works for 30 seconds, sometimes 3 seconds.

We have another program that run from the server. When it loads it gets the "Error performing inpage operation" and it doesnt even start. This program isnt insyalled on the vm, it just liked to the exe on the server.

This same setup works fine as a regular workstation. We made a copy of a working workstation that is this vm.

We looked into wins, dns, and mtu issues. All look fine. MTU was 1472 + 28 to get us back to 1500. The server MTU is 1500 and i read somewhere the vm should match the host.

This vm is running as a guest on the host server where the network shares are. The trafic doesnt have to go far. No firewall on this server, and no firewall on the vm.

Hi,

I'm unable to connect via SSH to one of my hosts using putty. The others are fine. Tried from different clients, same result.

I can putty into my vMA 4 server and ssh root@hostname to get a connection no problem but not directly from putty

This tells me that SSH service is fine.

Checked the sshd_config settings
