vmrun responds with "Error: Unknown Error"

$

Hello,

OS: CentOS 6 x86_64, VMWare Server 2 of the latest known version. Everything works just fine when controlled via Web interface.

I am trying to do batch VM stop/start to have its files backed up. To stop VM, I run (as root) from SSH shell at the same server where VMWare Server is running a command like this:

vmrun -T server -h https://server:8333 -u vmroot -p 'vmpass' stop /full/path/to/server.vmx

All I see is "Error: Unknown Error". Not too informative, I must add.

When the host URL is used with the same name/password, it works fine.

Could someone suggest ways to overcome this error? Thanks.

Hi all,

until last week i had Vmware Server 2.0.2 running perfectly on my Windows 7 64 bit machine. After the last patch day it will not start anymore.

I already deinstalled and reinstalled it, no success.

I went to the firewall and set port 8222 and 8333 completely open.

The i have seen in services.msc that "Vmware Host Agent" is not started. Properties are set to "automatic start". But it will not start. Trying to start it manualy i only get the message it cannot be startet, error code -1. When i look at the system event log, i see an event id 7024 with text "Der Dienst "VMware Host Agent" wurde mit folgendem dienstspezifischem Fehler beendet: %%-1.". Xml-View is:

Any suggestions how i can it running again?

Thank you all!

ESXi 5.1 on HP (ProLiant DL380p Gen8) Hardware Monitoring / Health Status Issues

I am having trouble with getting accurate hardware monitoring with ESXi 5.1 on an HP (ProLiant DL380p Gen8) server. The build installed is 799733 (HP version, with HP Tools installed)

I am using this server as an example, however we have other servers that don't appear to be showing correct hardware information either. We use N-Able for our RMM software, and I noticed that it detected 5 power supplies for this server (4, 5, and 6 showed normal while 1 and 2 showed a failure). Also, all of the fans were showing a failed status for health state as well. I called N-Able and they looked into it and basically told me that the UI was displaying the information given by VMware, and I would need to contact VMware to see why it wasn't giving out the correct health information.

When I vSphere directly to the Hyper Visor I can see that N-Able may be correct. Under Power it shows the following information:

In N-Able it detected power supply 1-2, 4,5, & 6. 1 & 2 show failed, the rest show that they are fine. There are not 5 power supplies in this server. Also, N-Able detected 6 fans and shows the following for all of them.

N-Able pulls Fan and Power Supply status directly from the ESXi via

More than 4GB memory on 32bit Linux with VMWare Server 2?

$

Hi All,

Do you have any experience to use more than 4 GB memory by a 64 bit guest on a 32 bit host OS?

The host computer is Intel Core2 Duo T6600 CPU with 4 GB phy. RAM, but I want to upgrade to 8GB. The host OS is FC9 32 bit, 2.6.26 kernel, with PAE on.

I use several math applications and I am thinking on to upgrade to VMWare Server 2.0 if I can use that benefits. I do not have time to reinstall the host os and use 64 bit now...Unfortunately I have not found any info about this subject in the docs.

Any infos and suggestions are welcome!

Kind regards,

Paul

vmware-mount fails with Fuse ntfs-3g

Problem: Cannot mount VMware virtual disk to shrink it in RHEL 4

Description:

First, a MS Windows disk check and defrag was done inside the guest OS. Then a VMware defrag was done using Virtual Disk Manager.

cd /var/lib/vmware/VirtualMachines/KC130WSUSI

vmware-vdiskmanager -d KC130WSUSI.vmdk

Following the steps in the "Virtual Disk Manager User's Guide", I then attempted to mount the virtual disk in preparation for shrinking but encountered an error.

vmware-mount /home/vmware/VirtualMachines/KC130WSUSI/KC130WSUSI.vmdk /mnt/KC130WSUSI

-

[Mount Error]----

mount: fs type ntfs not supported by kernel

Failed to mount partition 1 of disk '/home/vmware/VirtualMachines/KC130WSUSI/KC130WSUSI.vmdk' on '/mnt/KC130WSUSI': A loop device operation failed

-

The VMware Disk Mount User's Guide says "Disk Mount on Linux requires the Fuse package". We have both fuse and fuse-ntfs-3g packages installed, yet vmware-mount doesn't seem to recognize this driver.

There is only one partition in this virtual disk and it's NTFS.

vmware-mount -p /home/vmware/VirtualMachines/KC130WSUSI/KC130WSUSI.vmdk

I was able to accomplish the shrink using VMware Tools within the guest OS. Within the Windows Server 2003 Guest, opened VMware Tools. On the tab the C: drive is shown as a supported partition. Clicked button. When finished (about 30 min) it asks if I want to shrink now. Clicking begins the process. While running (about 1 hour) the guest is non-responsive but the shrink appears to be successful.

Questions:

1. Is there something I'm missing in the procedure to shrink off-line using the Virtual Disk Manager?

2. Is there an undocumented flag for vmware-mount to tell it what filesystem driver to use (like -t for native Linux mount)?

Revert to Snapshot not working properly

Hello everyone

I've made a VM machine to make images on, to get as clean images as possible. And during this process I've taken alot of snapshots, and reverted, but now it seems that the reverting doesnt work. It doesn't put the machine back in the state it was, even though the server says its reverted.

Any suggestions on this?

windows 2003 guest with slow network speed

I have vmware server 2 installed on Windows 2008 host.  There are a few windows 2003 enterprise guests and they all have poor utilization of my host network.

My host has 1Gbps connection and it is right now using less than 1% of that connection.  If I start a large file copy on that host from another physical server it will use close to 100% of the connection.  If I try to copy the same file to a guest running windows 2003 it will go waaaaay slower and only bump my host total network usage up to 2%!  I would like my guests to utilize as much network as they can when it is available.

Any tips?

Need help, installing on Windows Server 2003 takes down my network!

Hey everyone,

I have Windows Server 2003 that I use as my Microsoft Dynamics CRM server.  I'm trying to install VMWare Server 2 on it but having issues.  It installs completely fine and then reboots.  At the log on screen, Windows gives an error "Service Control Manager  : At least one service or driver failed during system startup.  Use Event Viewer to examine the event log for details."

When I log in, my network settings show my network card then 2 VMWare network cards.  I can go on the internet no problem, but no computers on my network can see or ping my server anymore, even directly by IP, they just don't see it.

I checked event viewer, and had a few error messages, the first was:

"The Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service could not start because another program or service is running that might use the network address translation component (Ipnat.sys). This can occur when Routing and Remote Access is enabled. If this is the case, you must disable Routing and Remote Access before the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service can start."

Now, I had routing and remote access enabled but I don't use it, so I disabled it rebooted same thing.

Next error was:

Cannot register the URL prefix 'http://10.0.0.50:80/' for site '1012790098'. The necessary network binding may already be in use. The site has been deactivated.  The data field contains the error number.

Then the next:

The Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service terminated with the following error:

The requested resource is in use.

Until I disabled remote access, clicking Firewall would say some .sys file was in use and couldn't open.  I basically had to uninstall VMware and reboot a few times before it cleared and I could access the server from other PCs again.

I'm not really sure what the above means.  What could VMWare server have done that restricted any other PCs on the network from seeing and accessing the server?  Again the server was on the network, I could ping machines and browse the web.

Thanks so much!

Hi,

I'm running Win7 64bit.

I'm trying to uninstall VMWare Server and I get this error message:

Error 1336 There was an error creating a temporary file that is needed to complete this installation, Folder: F:\Config.Msi\. System error code: 5

The file is created. Its read only. I've tried changing the attributes, deleting it but no luck. Any help, suggestions appreciated.

I see plenty of links talking about how to migrate VMWare VMs to ProxMox, but I haven't been able to find even one in the other direction!

Can anyone provide instructions for migrating a ProxMox VM to VMWare Server?

VMDK recovery / vmware-mount: It is not safe to mount the virtual disk.

Hi,

I'm trying to recover a vmdk from a VMWare Workstation VM which apparently wasn't shutdown cleanly. I'm using vmware-mount to mount it, but all options I tried so far have failed miserably. My main goal is to recover a few small files (5 or so) that are missing from the most recent backup, but vmware-mount does not let me mount the disk. There seems to be no way to force vmware-mount to mount the disk.

Is there a way to force vmware-mount to mount it? Is the disk recoverable at all?

All help is appreciated.

I am unable to remove a datastore from VMWare Server 2.  It keeps throwing back an error:

The resource is in Use.

Is there a way to remove it manually? I'm new with VMWare Server.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You,

VMWare server bridged mode not working - connected to LAN through Cisco IP phone

$

For the longest time, I couldn't figure out why I couldn't get the bridged networking to work on my machine.  I could never get an IP address via DHCP and if I hard-coded the address to match the IP scheme on our network, I could ping the host machine, but nothing past it.  I finally determined if I connected my machine directly to a switch, it worked just fine.  However at my desk, my PC connects to the LAN through a port in my IP phone (Cisco 7961 series).  When connected through the phone, the bridged networking simply doesn't work. However connected directly to the same switch the phone is in, it works fine.

I'm wondering if anyone has solved this before (or even if there is a solution).  Is there a setting on the phone I can change which will correct this?  Or is the connection method doomed to failure?

Thanks,

Kenny

Networking in a VM : can ping but can't browse !!!

Hello. This might sound trivial, but obviously I'm missing something here... So here's the setup :

I have a Windows 2008 server (Web Edition) ; this server has a network card that's got a public IP address working OK.

I have VMWare 2.0 installed on that server.

Then I have a VM running a Windows 2003 SBS setup. The network card in the VM is using VMWare's NAT. For convenience I have setup Window 2003 to use a manual IP address rather than a DHCP-obtained one, but that makes no difference with regards to the issue.

The problem :

- within the VM, I can ping outside (like ping www.google.com works allright), DNS requests are resolved Ok (as in ping www.google.com works ) ; querying a DNS on the Internet using nslookup works Ok as well.

- I can not browse outside !? with IE

- I have tried telnetting known working servers on various ports (25, 80, 21, 110...) with no success at all

FWIW, I can also rdp into the Windows 2003 client from anywhere on the Internet, having forwarded the appropriate port in VMWare's NAT configuration.

So far, this sounds like a firewall issue. The thing is, the firewall in the Windows 2003 client is disabled and I tried with the Windows 2008 firewall disabled as well. No luck.

Ideas welcome...

Router Not Showing Vmware Machine

$

Good Day Folks,

Please excuse my naive questions. I am very new to vmware and in most of the IT world. I did tried searching for this topic and was unsuccessfull in finding one.

I have installed VMWARE server 2.0.2 and so far its working all good. I am using it for my study regarding microsoft's 70 640 exam. I am unable to find answer for the following :

My Router(physical not virtual) ip address is 192.168.1.254 /24. It also acts as dhcp server providing addresses to clients in range of 192.168.1.64-253. I have installed a guest Windows 2k8 server on one vmware machine. On this vmware machine the ip address is 192.168.5.2 /24 and its default gateway is 192.168.5.1. I have another vmware client's which have ip address in the range on 192.168.5.x range. The Windows 2k8 can ping all the clients as they are in 192.168.5.x network.  Please note that all the vmware machines are configured as Bridged mode.

Now if i look into my Router( Physical) i do not see any vmware machine as an active connected pc on the router. I can not understand how come then all the vmware clients are able to ping each other as i do not see them connected to Router/Switch.

One last question, If i change the win2k8 vmware machine's ip address to obtain it automatically, then i can see the vmware machine as a connected pc on my Router. But if i assign the same ip address manually (The ip address which DHCP gave it automatically) then i do not see the vmware pc as a connected pc on router anymore.

Thanks for your valuable time folks.

VMware Server awfully slow and connection drops

I installed the VMware Server 2.0.2 (Build 203138), including Web  Access 2.0.0 (Build 128374) to my Ubuntu Linux server (2.6.32-24-server  #39-Ubuntu SMPx86_64). The server host has no console GUI, it's just  acting as server. The server seems to be running fine. I can log in from  a different machine (WinXP using Internet Explorer) and see the virtual  machines overview.

However,  whatever I click, it takes ages to load (client and server are  connected via GigE, just two hubs, no weird networs etc). I often see  error messages in my logfile /var/log/vmware/hostd.log. For example,  when I log in, I read:

I am really clueless.  I am using VMware for some time now, a Windows XP machine hosts a  virtual Linux. This was an attempt to do it the other way, but at the  current state, this is not usable. The problem doesn't seem to be  relared to any particular activity as it happens even when I do nothing  after login.

Does anybody have any idea where to search for the problem?

VMWare Host agent fail to start 0x40000015 0x781346b4

Hi everybody

This post is not to send a question, but an answer !

Host OS : Windows XP SP3

I was using VMWare server 2.0 successfully for a while, when my company's laptop has to endure a rebuild.

Since this reformat, I was unable to start VMWare Host agent  , getting the sybilyn error :

VMWare Host agent fail to start 0x40000015 0x781346b4

Even after several uninstall/reinstall, datastores.xml check and so on ...

Finalyy, the trick to make this service running was simple :

My laptop is protected with Mcafee and Mcafee firewall was enable.

The workaround is to disable Mcafee firewall.

VMWare Host agent is then able to run.

I guess a more secure way is to add special permissions for VMWare services, in order of being able to have Mcafee firewall running AND VMware host service able to run normally ...

Hope this message can help some VMWare guests ...

Regards

Oracle Licensing under VMWare

Dear VMWare community,

We are a development team of 5 in a company of around 1000 people. We are using VMWare on IBM Blade machines for development purposes. In the virtual machines we have installed several Oracle Enterprise and Standard edition databases. Now Oracle has performed an audit on us and the result, in a nutshell, is that the licensing model from Oracle has changed and we have to pay retroactively about $1,3 Million for the wrong use of their licenses on VMWare. We are astonished with these results. Could you please give us some advice?

VM network connections get sluggish

I have a host server running Server 08 and VMWARE Server 2.0.0

There is a VM on the host running Server 2003. It's been running for about 6 months great. No one has touched it. Recently, only the VM has started to have an extremely slow internet connection. Downloading a 1 MB file from the internet takes about 15 minutes. A 15 MB file takes 4 hours. About a month ago I could restart the VM and it would be good for about a week, then start slowing down more and more every day until it's just unusable.

I ran pings from the host machine's nic to the VM's NIC and attached as txt files. You'll see that on the host machine, 172.16.4.200 is the host IP assigned to the NIC I'm pinging from, and 172.16.4.101 is the VM's IP that is running on the host. It will succeed in pinging .101 sometimes, but frequently returns:

REPLY FROM 172.16.4.200: TTL Expired in transit.

Sometimes it even gives a request timed out, but it mostly alternates back and forth between replies from .101 (the VM) and TTL's from .200 (the host).

Sometimes it will just give pages of TTL's from .200 then eventually start replying from .101 as well.

The VM NIC is configured in Bridged mode. Like I said, it had been working fine for months, then this starts happening suddenly.

Since I know a 1 MB file from the internet takes 15 minutes on the VM to download, I tried copying files between the Host and the VM by browsing network shares between the boxes. Transferring from the VM to the Host over windows network shares takes about 1 minute for a 40 MB file. It's operating at about 1.2 megabytes per second on LAN file transfers. I tried it both ways, from the VM to the host and from the host to the VM. Same results.

It's strange that a direct file copy works MUCH faster than an internet download.

Downloading from the internet on the Host server for a 1 MB file takes about 15 seconds and is on a T-1 line. The default gateway for both the host and the VM is a Cisco 2900 series router that's working fine.

Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening? My Microsoft Server event logs on the VM and Host are clean, I'm not seeing any errors there.

Windows 2003 Standard 4 CPU 4 GB memory limitation

Windows 2003 Standard has a 4 cpu and 4 GB memory recognition limitation.  But when virtualizing a physical server that is running Windows 2003 Standard, would it be possible to allocate more than 4 processors and more than 4 GB memory and then do something, for example with a parameter to customize how the virtual machine is using processor count, memory, through the VM properties > General > Configuration Parameters > adding or editing existing params such as the cpuid.coresPerSocket ... ???  Simply setting the memory to 8 GBs on a Windows 2003 Standard virtual machine would simply be a waste of resources, yes?  Can anything be done from the virtual side to get over these 2003 Standard limits?
