RedHat guest cannot see all memory allocated

$

Hi, we're running RedHat Enterprise Linux 7 (64bit) on ESXi 5.5. The VM has 2 GB RAM allocated. However, in the guest OS, Output of "free" or /proc/meminfo show that total memory is a bit less than 2GB (18xxxxx bytes). I've no idea as in VMware KB: Virtual machine memory limits and hardware versions , guest with hardware version of 7 or above can 'see' all the memory allocated.

Would anyone please help? Thanks a lot.

/ST Wong

Can't shutdown Virtual Machine via VMrun

I have a Windows Server 2003 as host, with VMware Server 2.0 (build 122956), with a Windows XP (SP3) installed as a virtual machine. I'm trying to shut down the image from the host, but I'm having no luck..

The list command works fine:

D:\VirtualMachines>"c:\program files\VMware\VMwareServer\vmrun.exe" -T server -h https://mymachine.domain.com:8333/sdk -u <MyUsername> -p <MyPassword> list

Total running VMs: 1

FTP_main/Windows XP Professional.vmx

But when I try to shut down that machine:

D:\VirtualMachines>"c:\program files\VMware\VMwareServer\vmrun.exe" -T server -h https://mymachine.domain.com:8333/sdk -u <MyUsername> -p <MyPassword> stop "[dstore] FTP_main/Windows XP Professional.vmx" soft

Error: The virtual machine is not powered on: FTP_main/Windows XP Professional.vmx

It

is powered on, and I don't have a clue as to what is wrong here..

Anybody have any tips here?

VMware Server 2.0.x webAccess interfaces flakey... "web service not available"

$

I've been having this problem for a while. Sometimes when I try to login or even after I login I get kicked out of the web GUI with "web service not available" message. I've seen this posted all over when doing a google search and seems like the problem existed even in beta before 2.0 was released.

The hostd.log was useless. But, I did find the following entries in proxy.log at the moment this failure happens:

Updates thread error notification. PrevError=null, NewError=RuntimeFault, NewErrorMessage=spec

Error processing action request /view/fetch : spec

Fetching propertySet failed for id = 2120

Error processing action request /view/fetch : javax.xml.rpc.JAXRPCException: Number of parameters passed in (3) doesn't match the number of IN/INOUT parameters (2) frm the addParameter() calls

The last line to me seems to hint at a possible bug? Anybody know of a resolution to this problem? I'm on VMware Server 2.0.1, running on CentOS 5.3/x86_64.

TIA

Bridge Network Adapters Always Start Disconnected

I've been working on this for two weeks with no success. Everytime I reboot my server, Windows Server 2008 R2 & VmWare Sever 2.02 any VMs that are set to bridged networking boot with their network adapter set as disconnected. It requires a manual "click" of the checkbox to turn on the network adapter. I have been using VMware server since version 1 and have never had this problem. One unusual thing is the Manager Virtual Networks Auto-Bridging doesn't seem to show any network adapters, although networking continues to work. If I set my VM to NAT or host only my adapter starts connected, as it should.

Things I have tried:

Uninstall VmWare server & Reinstall

Uninstall and create various VM Hosts, all do the same, pre-compiled applicanece and all costum built.

Moved host images to another server (works fine)

Checked to make sure Bridge Protcal is installed on ethernet adapter, even removed and readded.

Uninstalled and reinstalled ethernet adapter (Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCI-E Ethernet Controller(NDIS6.20)

This is a Windows Server 2008 R2 box with lots of ram and plenty of resources only running spiceworks & splunk in a test capacity. Using this machine for testing and pre-deployment but it's virtual machines need to act like they would in production.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Failed to expand vmdk

Dear VMWare community,

I wanted to expand the virtual disc of a vm. I'm using VMWare Server 2 on Windows 7 (64-bit) and the vm runs Ubuntu 10.04. I had assigmed 20GB for the vmdk but I run out of space so I wanted to increase it. I used both the command line and the GUI to do it, but both fail.

I get an "Unknown error 0x45d000900000001 always at 73% (even if I change the exteded size)

C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Server>vmware-vdiskmanager.exe -x 32GB "C:\Virtual Machines\ubuntu 10.04\ubuntu 10.04.vmdk"
  Grow: 73% done.Failed to expand the disk 'C:\Virtual Machines\ubuntu 10.04\ubuntu 10.04.vmdk': Unknown error (0x45d000900000001).

I tried the same command for a second vm I had and it worked without any problem.

That's my vmx file in case you need it:

Problem starting a Virtual Machine, hangs at 95 %

Hi

I created an XP vm on a Vista 64 host and when I try to launch it status hangs at 95%... (the OS has not yet been installed that`s what I'm trying to do)

Does anyone knows what the problem might be ? Is there a log or something similar that I could look at to give me an idea of what the problem is ?

Thanks

Paul

vmnet2/vmnet3 Bridge does not work

$
0
0

I used to work with VMWare workstation but now I moved over to VMWare Server 2.0

I have a server with 2 NICs one NIC (NIC1 linked to vmnet2) is tied to my companies intranet the other NIC2 (linked to vmnet3) is tied to my local network I have setup.

I have installed a VMWare session with Win Server 2003 R2+SP2 with one NIC which is set to vmnet3.

That used to work well on my VMWare workstation but now its not working anymore.'

I did run Wireshark on the host to monitor the traffic on NIC2. If I do a ping from the host via NIC2 to the Win Server 2003 I see the packages but the Win 2003 server does not respond to the ping requests.

Same happens vice-versa: if I ping from the Win 2003 server to the host I also see those ping requests on Wireshark (running on the host) but the host does not respond.

If I configure the Win 2003 server to use vmnet2 and change the ips to an appropriate intranet IP its also not working.

What do I wrong. What is so different from VMWare workstation to VMWare server?

vmhgfs.sys causes ASSERT() failure

$
0
0

When I create a VM for Vista x64 on Workstation 6.5 and then 'move' it to Server 2.0, the following ASSERT() occurs (debugger attached, of course).

      • Assertion failed: Missing StreamContext Support: post IRP_MJ_CREATE, not a paging file: (volume->FileSystemType == FLT_FSTYPE_MS_NETWARE) || FlagOn(irpSp->Flags,SL_OPEN_PAGING_FILE)

      • Source File: d:\rtm\base\fs\filtermgr\filter\fltmgr.c, line 703

Break repeatedly, break Once, Ignore, terminate Process, or terminate Thread (boipt)? o

Collecting the details (shown below) it would appear that VMHGFS.SYS is causing a problem. AFAIK, VMHGFS.SYS should be 'inert' with server since there is no "Shared Folders" support.

Any ideas on how to make this issue go away?

TIA,

-Dave

Constant NullPointerException: Operation failed. errors in web UI

I just did a fresh install of VMware 2.0 on a single core Athlon server using Fedora Core 9. I have another FC9 server running vmware more stable then this though it still flakes out at times.

This new install howeever spurts out the NullPointerException: Operation failed. error pretty much all the time.

Also it hangs at "loading" and I have to hit refresh. Has anyone encountered this before?

Hello,

I set up a virtual machine (configured with NAT virtual networking) running vsftpd on Linux as a FTP server. This FTP server is SSL enabled with both control and data connections requiring SSL. Active FTP is disabled, only passive FTP is enabled.

I configured the file /etc/vmware/vmnet8/nat/nat.conf to have port 21/tcp on the host forwarded to port 21/tcp on the guest. I also defined forwardings for the passive ports.

From the host, I can successfully ftps the guest IP address on port 21/tcp. I use lftp as the FTP client and all works as expected.

Now, if I try to ftps the host IP address on port 21/tcp, then it does not work. Debugging FTP information on both client and server sides give the following.

On the client side:

$ lftp -p 21 -u bob XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX

Password:

lftp bob@XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:~> debug

lftp bob@XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:~> ls

-

Thu Jan 15 11:31:49 2009 FTP response: Client "XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX", "234 Proceed with negotiation."

It is like if the TLS negotiation could not be made... The FTP server never receives the command "OPTS UTF8 ON" sent by the FTP client.

I tried a lot of things but I am stuck with this. Does anybody know what may be happening here?

Thanks.

Disabling hgfs mount in Solaris

Hi All,

We've just deployed two Solaris 10 VM boxes and have found that the /hgfs (host-guest file system) mount causes problems with our backup software. I'd like to disable this if possible so that our backups can run as normal.

I've done a 'umount /hgfs' and then removed the associated folder but it still comes back. It doesn't exist at all in \etc\vfstab but still re-appears whenever the box is restarted.

Help!

EDIT: Would unticking all of the 'vmware tool' options under 'Inventory -> Virtual Machine -> Edit Settings' make a difference?

Which software can I use to monitor multiple VMs?

hey everyone

i've got the free vmware server running on 3 machines: a win2k3 server, and 2 centOS servers. all work beautifully.

I've been managing them using the web interface (serverip:8333) which is ok. I just got vmware infrastracture client which allows me to connect to one at a time. what software can i use to see all 3 servers and their clients, and run the same options (reports, load etc) as i can on vmware infrastracture client?

i followed the link to vmware infrastracture but i'm just completely confused. that seems like an entire package, looks like they want me to install all these licensing servers and god knows what on my servers. i just want the desktop client that handles multiple VMware servers. possible?

VMs power on stuck at 95%

Hello virtual people,

I have a serious issue with VMware Server 2 on Windows Vista x64.

When I try to power on a virtual machine, it stucks at 95% on the "Power On Virtual Machine" task.

It happens with all of my VMs, Windows and non-Windows.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling VMware Server but the issue won't solve

Do you have any clue on how to solve this ?

Here is attached a sample log...

Virtual Machine suspends randomly?

$

This one is driving me nuts, I have a virtual machine that randomly suspends itself. I checked the power options inside the VM, it's not set to any power plans (it should stay on).

I checked the logs on the host and there's no specific events that could've caused this, and the only thing I can see is within the vmx's log that the VMTools initiated the suspend call. I thought this was isolated to this particular VM, but the problem has spread to the other VMs right now, to a lesser frequency.

Environment:

Host: Windows 2008 Enterprise x64, VMWare Server 2, running 4 total Virtual Machine, Quad Core Xeon 2.8ghz, 16GB RAM

Guest: Windows 2003 Enterprise x86 SP2, using 2 proc threads, 2GB RAM, virtualized from physical machine by VMware vCenter.

The marked path does not exist on the VMServer! It is a path of a client machine which has set up this clone. But this wrong path is not in the config file. Instead I found it in the Windows XP Professional-cl1.vmdk imagefile! I opened that 3Gig file with a text editor and changed the path. Now the VM starts. But I cannot expect this fix of our users. What am I doing wrong? I read in this forum that people have multiple vmdk files, some of them to be somthing like "additional config files". But i didn't really understand.

Any ideas how to avoid such thing? Recomended readings?

Thanks a lot for any help!

I have instaled Vmware server 2.01 in Ubuntu 9.04 - Jaunty Jackalope, but the virtual machines have problems to connect : "The network bridge on device vmnet0 is temporarily down because the

bridged Ethernet interface is down. The virtual machine may not be able

to communicate with the host or with other machines on your network".

When I try to config again the vmware with "sudo /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl", appears the next:

The following VMware kernel modules have been found on your system that were

not installed by the VMware Installer.

Please remove them then run this installer again.

vmci

vmnet

vmmon

I.e. - 'rm /lib/modules/2.6.28-15-generic/misc/<ModuleName>.{o,ko}'

Execution aborted.

Thanks.

Revert to Snapshot not working properly

Hello everyone

I've made a VM machine to make images on, to get as clean images as possible. And during this process I've taken alot of snapshots, and reverted, but now it seems that the reverting doesnt work. It doesn't put the machine back in the state it was, even though the server says its reverted.

Any suggestions on this?

BIOS .bios440 has unexpected file size

Hi,

I have just installed VM Server 2.0.2 on Ubuntu 10.04 and tried to open an existing guest. However on start up I get the following error:

BIOS

.bios440 has unexpected file size 0xffffffffffffffff; not in the range

http://0x40000..0x80000.

I have had a hunt around on google etc... but to no avail.

Does anyone have any ideas of where to start in resolving this issue.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Tim.

pptp timeout on vm windows server 2008 r2

$

Hello,

on VMware Server 2.0.2 for Windows i have the following setup:

Host: Windows Server 2008 R2

VM: Windows Server 2008 R2

The VM has a bridged network adapter with its own public IP-Address connected to the internet and a VPN incoming connection is ready on the VM.

And here comes the problem:

The host CAN connect to the VM via VPN PPTP, but from outside a client computer cannot - it fails with a timeout.

In detail:

A client (e.g. Win7) trying to connect via VPN (PPTP) hangs at "Verifying user name password..." and after two minutes, the connections gets closed error 619. On the Host this failed connection is logged as Event ID 20252 "The user connected to port VPN3-127 has been disconnected because the authentication process did not complete within the required amount of time."

Other VPN models, e.g. SSTP work without a problem.

I have tried any setting with total firewall off etc. so from now on I assume a problem with the vmware virtual network adapter. It seems to fail to read the GRE- or PPTP Protocol.

vmrun responds with "Error: Unknown Error"

Hello,

OS: CentOS 6 x86_64, VMWare Server 2 of the latest known version. Everything works just fine when controlled via Web interface.

I am trying to do batch VM stop/start to have its files backed up. To stop VM, I run (as root) from SSH shell at the same server where VMWare Server is running a command like this:

vmrun -T server -h https://server:8333 -u vmroot -p 'vmpass' stop /full/path/to/server.vmx

All I see is "Error: Unknown Error". Not too informative, I must add.

When the host URL is used with the same name/password, it works fine.

Could someone suggest ways to overcome this error? Thanks.
