Could not connect to remote server

Hello,

I'm totally new to VMWare Server, which I installed today...

When I try to start it using

VMWare Server > VMWare Server Home Page

it opens the browser with this address...

url : https://_my_full_computer_name_:8333/ui/

But connection fails with this message :

Could not connect to remote server

I've tried some others like

http://localhost:8222/ui/

https://localhost:8333/ui/

127.0.0.1:8333/ui

but they all show the same error...

If I try to start with Web Access

http://127.0.0.1:8308/ui/

I get this error message:

The VMware Infrastructure Web Service at "http://localhost:8222/sdk" is not responding (Connection Refused).

Try AgainThe service may not be responding because hostd is too busy or because it is not running. Try again in a few moments or restart hostd.

Until communication with the VI Web Service is restored, VI Web Access will not be able to manage any hosts.

More Information (empty)

My System Information is:

Windows XP 64Bits (fully updated)

FYI - My license for VMware Server 2 expired, but I did not know this. I thought my VMs were completely farked. Turns out a quick look at one of their log files revealed the following:

Dec 09 22:12:28.704: vmx| http://msg.License.product.expired This product has expired.

Dec 09 22:12:28.704: vmx| Make sure that your computer's date and time are set correctly.

Dec 09 22:12:28.704: vmx| There is a more recent version available at the VMware Web site: "http://vmware.com/info?id=4".

Dec 09 22:12:28.704: vmx| -

Dec 09 22:12:28.705: vmx| Module License power on failed.

Dec 09 22:12:28.705: vmx| VMX_PowerOn: ModuleTable_PowerOn = 0

Dec 09 22:12:28.708: vmx| Transitioned vmx/execState/val to poweredOff

It would have been nice for the web interface to let me know that the product was expired. I guess I never installed the GA version.

p2v - vm contains hidden network connections

I hope this is the right forum. I'll try to keep this as brief as possible. Please keep in mind that I basically know enough about vmware to be dangerous, but am by no means an expert.

I was asked by a client to set up a somewhat "failover backup". They are a small office with only one 2003 SBS. I found THIS SITE and suggested that we do that. Overall, the method worked pretty well.

However, upon booting up the VM (network adapters disconnected of course), I noticed that the three connections on the original box are named LAN, WAN, and BACKUP...all with static addresses. The three connections in the VM are called Local Area Connection, Local Area Connection 2, and Local Area Connection 3...all with default DHCP settings. When I booted down the original SBS and connected the VM, I could not connect to the network at all. When I went into the connections, renamed them, and assigned the appropriate IP settings, I got a message that a connection already exists with those settings, but is "hidden".

I discussed this with a colleague who had seen this before and told me to check HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\network\(the first key under that), and to remove the incorrect connections. I did this, rebooted, and now 2003 SBS is "stuck" on "preparing network connections".

I'm going to do a new p2v tonight and start over tomorrow, but I thought someone else might have more info before I start again in the morning.

Any suggestions?

How to Install Ubuntu Linux on Windows XP using VMware Server - Thanks to cmsproducer

$

Ubuntu linux installation is painless as explained in this document. Ubuntu is a valuable and completely free distribution of Linux. It is open-source and software libre meaning that it's free of any limitations that GPL or LGPL may pose. Like other Linux distributions, Ubuntu will enable you to text your applications in Linux.

Challenge

The common challenge for many users is that fact that one must either configure dual-boot into windows or Ubuntu Linux, or set-aside a PC for use with this operating system. Often, especially for smaller companies and consultancies that may not have the resources, it is not possible to set-aside a PC system just for testing or learning Linux if that is not the popular platform within the organisation. Also, it may sometimes be necessary to switch between several operating system during development or testing, and this may not be possible in dual-boot environments, or if you are away from the office (in a situation where it's not possible to have your multiple systems).

Solution

To enable to simultaneously use of multiple operating systems on on computer, there are a number of low-level applications in the market; especially for Apple Computers to run Windows (More of these will be added especially now that Apple is using Intel Chips and shipping Microsoft Windows bundled with their new systems). Besides the fact that it costs money to enable Windows to run on a Mac, this feature did not exist on Windows Systems to enable them to run other OS for free until VMware started distributing it's Server.

Installation Procedure

  • Download and install the VMWare Server (You will be required to create an account in order to receive a registration key - necessary to run the software)

  • Install the server software (this will take a long time and also ask you to close common applications such as Mozilla, Outlook, OpenOffice)

  • Enter the product registration key when requested

  • You are not equipped with the VMWare server and you are ready to install operating systems

Installing Ubuntu Linux in the VMWare server

  1. Start the VMWare Server and from the home menu, select 'New Virtual Machine' and follow the instructions that follow to install a CD of Ubuntu Linux (If the CD auto-launches within Windows, cancel it and DO NOT install it in Windows lest you erase your physical disk)

  2. Make sure that you allocate enough disk space for the Ubuntu Linux installation partitions without compromising the other windows applications on your system (make the decision based on how much idle disk-space you have).

  3. Whenever Ubuntu 'talks' of formating the drive and erasing all information, do not be scared, it's only taking about the space allocated to it within the VMWare virtual machine environment

  4. The Ubuntu Linux installation will take some time to complete, and it's not any different or complex compared to installing Windows XP

  5. Make choices for screen-resolution, networking and RAM usage based on the resources that your system has, how often you will be using Ubuntu Linux Compared to your Windows applications, and your network setup

  6. When done, Ubuntu will restart the machine (all within the VMWare virtual machine without restarting your physical PC) and you should have a nice working installation of Ubuntu Linux within your Windows O

  7. The VMWare Server allows you to break free from the Ubuntu Linux or any other Virtual machine you may be using (to use your physical Windows machine) by pressing CONTROL + ALT

How to assign public IP to vmware guest

$

0

Hi, we are running dedicated server with CentOS. We installed VMware in

order to run a win2003 server. the problem is we need to access that

server from outside (public).  I contacted the Hosting company support and this is what they say:

"dedicated server environments use STATIC ips and there is no DHCP

server like he is talking about. If vmware cannot assign a static IP to

your guest then it's just not going to work. But I still think your

main issue is the lack of a network interface in the guest.......eitehr

way this is way beyond anything I am able to support at this point.

Asking forums for help probably won't work, you'll need to talk to real

tech support."

Below is my configuration:  (thanks in advance)

1. Configuration:

guest.commands.enabledonhost = "TRUE"

vmnet1.hostonlyaddress = "192.168.252.1"

authd.client.port = "902"

authd.proxy.nfc = "vmware-hostd:ha-nfc"

loop.fullpath = "/usr/bin/vmware-loop"

guest.commands.anonguestpasswordonhost = ""

product.buildnumber = "122956"

vmnet1.hostonlynetmask = "255.255.255.0"

authd.proxy.vim = "vmware-hostd:hostd-vmdb"

bindir = "/usr/bin"

dhcpd.fullpath = "/usr/bin/vmnet-dhcpd"

guest.commands.anonguestusernameonhost = ""

control.fullpath = "/usr/bin/vmware-cmd"

product.version = "2.0.0"

authd.fullpath = "/usr/sbin/vmware-authd"

guest.commands.allowanonrootguestcommandsonhost = "FALSE"

vmware.fullpath = "/usr/bin/vmware"

libdir = "/usr/lib/vmware"

guest.commands.allowanonguestcommandsonhost = "FALSE"

vmdir = "/home/cocotuc/vm"

authd.soapserver = "TRUE"

product.name = "VMware Server"

2. Troubleshooting steps:

tried to use NAT, bridged and host-only

tried to statically assigning the eth1 IP to the virtual machine and not able to access the outside world

i'm able to ping anything when the vmware machine is 192.168.252.1

3. Not sure where/what to find 'diagnostic output'

4. Not sure where/what to find 'logging'

5. We are using:

Unable to start the VMWare host agent service

$

I have been working on this issue for quite some time with no resolution.  I initially had a problem executing the VMWare Server Home Page so I installed the VMWare Server Console and receive the following error when attempting to launch the VMWare Server Console on the same server the VMWare Server is installed and connect locally:

501 Global command GLOBAL server-vmdb to non-host agent targets not supported.

Came to the conclusiong that this was the result of the VMware Host Agent service not being able to start.

Environment:

IBM BladeCenter HT Chassis

IBM eServer HS21 - 8853AC1

NetXtreme Broadcom5704S

2x Quad Core Intel(R) Xeon(R) E5440 @ 2.83 GHz

I initially installed VMWare Server 2.0 then upgraded to 2.0.1 to see if that would resolve the issue but still no success.

Event Viewer message:

The VMware Host Agent service terminated with service-specific error 4294967295 (0XFFFFFFFF)

Steps tried so far:

  1. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times to no avail

  2. Tried manually starting the VMWare Host Agent

  3. Tried upgrading from VMWARE 2.0 to VMWARE 2.0.1

  4. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling

  5. Tried running the service as ADMINISTRATOR

This is the only VMWare Server service that will not start..I've googled and I can not find a resolution for this problem.

100% CPU - VM not reachable, restart host necessary

Hi,

We are using VMware server 2.0 build 122956.

Operating system on host: Windows 2003 R2 X64

On the VMware server we have two virtual machines.

Both Windows 2003 R2 standard machines

Today, after more then 7 months, onde of the machines gave the following problem in de vmware.log:

May 15 06:26:15.354: vmx| GuestRpcSendTimedOut: message to toolbox timed out.

May 15 06:26:15.385: vmx| GuestRpcSendTimedOut: message to toolbox-dnd timed out.

May 15 06:26:30.370: vmx| GuestRpcSendTimedOut: message to toolbox timed out.

May 15 06:26:30.370: vmx| GuestRpc: app toolbox's second ping timeout; assuming app is down

May 15 06:26:30.401: vmx| GuestRpcSendTimedOut: message to toolbox-dnd timed out.

May 15 06:26:30.401: vmx| GuestRpc: app toolbox-dnd's second ping timeout;

We couldn'nt reach the virtual machine and host anymore. After a restart of the host, the problem was (temporary??) solved.

What went wrong with our server?

Attachment:

- vmx file

- part of the log (beginning and end)

Is this also a knwon problem with ESXi ?

Thanks for your answer.

Best regards,

Strange keyboard issue: AltGr

$

I'm running VMware server 2.0.1 on Slackware-12.2 (Linux 2.6.27.7).

The AltGr key won't work in any VM's console, which is strange, because it works in the window manager. It looks like AltGr is just not recognized by the console.

Running e.g. Win98 in a VM I can get around this by using the ancient key combination left ctrl + left alt, but that doesn't work in e.g. NetBSD-5.0 for me.

Does anyone have any ideas where to tweak some setting to get AltGr working?

Monitoring bandwidth usage of VMs in a Windows host

$

Hi,

I have a Windows Server 2003 x64 with VMware Server 2 installed on it and a few virtual machines running.

I need to know how can I monitor bandwidth usage of this virtual machines? I have limited bandwidth quota in the server itself, so I need to know how much a guest VM is using so I can balance them, and because they are moderated by different administrators I can't install monitoring/reporting tool in the guests.

I tried a few softwares, such as Bandwidth Monitor (from bwmonitor.com) with no luck. They can monitor bandwidth usage of the host itself, but apparently not the VMware Bridged Network.

Is there anyway for doing this right?

Thank you.

Increase of disk capacity fails

Hi all,

I have a strange problem with VMWare Server 2 - I would like to increase the disk capacity of a vm (running win2003server64). The current size of the vm 161 GB. Free Space in the corresponding datastore is 96 GB. When I try to increase the disk capacity by an amount that is smaller than the 96 GB lef (i.e. 20GB), I get the error

"Reconfigure Virtual Machine" failed to complete

If these problems persist, please contact your system administrator.

Datails

Insufficient disk space on datastore ''.

Any idea, why the increase fails although there is enough free space available?

Thanks

Hi all,

I'd want to buy a notebook with Intel Core i7 and I'd

want to use VMWare on Windows 7 as host and boot a linux SO as

guest. Is Core i7 a problem? Which type of processor would see linux SO

guest? There are some problem with mobile i7 core and some linux

kernel: would linux SO guest see still a i7 processor?

Thank you,

Hello,

Whenever I click start on a program called Virtual Audio Cable my VM's audio device gets disabled.  If I stop Virtual Audio Cable and re-enable the guest audio device the sound comes back.  I've noticed the exact same thing when trying to broadcast on justin.tv.  Also tried VMware Server 2 with the same results.  Any idea how I can solve this issue?  thank you

CentOS 5.5 with VMWare & OpenVZ

$

I am running a CentOS 5.5 system which does NOT support VT Technology, so I am unable to use Xen HV. I am very happy with OpenVZ other than the fact that it doesn't support Windows, only Linux.

I'd like to have VMWare Server 2.x installed, but it appears that OpenVZ changes the Kernel to, in my case, 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.028stab069.6. The default kernel on my system is 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.i386.

If I change grub to load 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.i386, VMWare will work but OpenVZ will not. If I change grub to load 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.028stab069.6, OpenVZ will work, but VMWare will not.

If I try to run /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl while in the 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.028stab069.6 kernel, I get an error of:

None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Server is suitable for your

running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for

your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)?

Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running

kernel? /usr/src/linux/include

So, to resolve this... I've ran the following commands and rebooted... did not resolve:

yum install ovzkernel-devel

yum install kernel-devel

yum install gcc gcc-c++ autoconf automake

Each of those installed, but did not resolve the issue.

I've ran the command:

rpm -qil kernel-devel-2.6.18-194.3.1.el5

which provided me a long list of files, but when I ran the following commands, I got:

# rpm -qil kernel-devel-2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.i386

package kernel-devel-2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.i386 is not installed

# rpm -qil kernel-devel-2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.028stab069.6

package kernel-devel-2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.028stab069.6 is not installed

I've also tried running:

yum install kernel-devel-2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.028stab069.6

which resulted in:

No package kernel-devel-2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.028stab069.6 available.

I'm so lost as what to do now... is there anyway I can compile both of the kernels together somehow? Thanks in advance for any information you might be able to provide me in regards to this issue!

Can't log in to VMware Tools

I have installed VMware Server 2.xx (the current version) on my Ubuntu 10.04 host.

Everything seemed to be working fine and I was going to create a new NFS

datastore - at the moment didn't have time to complete the job so

closed the browser and shut down the computer. Now, a few hours later I

try to access VM Tools by opening my browser and entering http://localhost:8222

and my browser returns the message "unable to connect" "check Firefox

firewall settings" and some other stuff so tried using Chrome with the

same result. What happened to my computer in the OFF state over the past

few hours? Everything worked before I turned it off.

I checked my /etc/hosts file and everything seems OK there (I suppose??)

but how do I enter it without a domain? or actual domain name?

Router Not Showing Vmware Machine

$

Good Day Folks,

Please excuse my naive questions. I am very new to vmware and in most of the IT world. I did tried searching for this topic and was unsuccessfull in finding one.

I have installed VMWARE server 2.0.2 and so far its working all good. I am using it for my study regarding microsoft's 70 640 exam. I am unable to find answer for the following :

My Router(physical not virtual) ip address is 192.168.1.254 /24. It also acts as dhcp server providing addresses to clients in range of 192.168.1.64-253. I have installed a guest Windows 2k8 server on one vmware machine. On this vmware machine the ip address is 192.168.5.2 /24 and its default gateway is 192.168.5.1. I have another vmware client's which have ip address in the range on 192.168.5.x range. The Windows 2k8 can ping all the clients as they are in 192.168.5.x network.  Please note that all the vmware machines are configured as Bridged mode.

Now if i look into my Router( Physical) i do not see any vmware machine as an active connected pc on the router. I can not understand how come then all the vmware clients are able to ping each other as i do not see them connected to Router/Switch.

One last question, If i change the win2k8 vmware machine's ip address to obtain it automatically, then i can see the vmware machine as a connected pc on my Router. But if i assign the same ip address manually (The ip address which DHCP gave it automatically) then i do not see the vmware pc as a connected pc on router anymore.

Thanks for your valuable time folks.

Hi,

after a power failure, we have this issue on our vmware server..

We have installed 7 virtual machines, only 2 of them are now recognized and running.

for the other 5, we get an "configuration file cannot be found" error, and they are shown as

"Unknown (Inaccessible)"

"Unknown 1 (Inaccessible)"

"Unknown 2 (Inaccessible)"

"Unknown 3 (Inaccessible)"

"Unknown 4 (Inaccessible)"

instead of their proper names ...

Any suggestions ?
