Failover Recommendations?

Hello,

I have inherited a configuration that I was told was supposed to be completely redundant. When I explained to my boss that it wasn't he went a little loopy and insisted that I reconfigure everything so that there is no single point of failure.

It's 2 identical hosts each VMWare Server2 a "production" virtual machine and a "development" virtual machine. The production virtual machines are different. The host OS is Windows Server 2008 SP2, the VM's are running a proprietary product on a mysql database and Apache web server. I need for the 2 servers to be mirrors of one another in case of a hardware failure.

Is Vmotion an option in this particuar setup? Is there an inexpensive way to configure the redundancy that we need? I've seen Stawind Software's iSCSI High Availablity software but only with MS Hyper-V.

Host1: Host2:

Production1 Production2

Dev1 Dev2

This is probably very simple for some or most of you, any assistance you can offer would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Wes

I have a 4GB RAM on the Virtual server but the problem is the process is more than 4GB on the task bak. I installed Tomcat 5, Mirth and MySQL, and if I use the application I developed, the application runs slower and the process runs more than 4GB. What can I do Please?

NAT Problem, but only TCP (UDP working)

$

I have a very strange problem with VMWare Server 2 running on Windows Server 2008.

I have a VM running linux in the NAT network. From this VM, I am able to make outbound UDP connections (eg. a DNS query to an external nameserver works just fine). I am also able to set up port forwarding (both TCP as UDP) to the VM, for instance I can connect over SSH to my VM through the hosts' IP address. The only thing I can't do, is make an outbound TCP connection from the VM to the internet.

I have done some extensive testing on the host using Wireshark.

I can see the SYN packet from the VM go over the vmnet8 adapter. This SYN is then sent over my phisical network adapter. I also receive the ACK,SYN back from the external host over the physical network adapter. I do NOT see the ACK,SYN go back over the vmnet8 to the VM.

I have tried disabling the firewall on both the host as the VM, but the problem is exactly the same. This makes me believe that the problem is somewhere to be looked for in the VMWare NAT service. I have already tried the repair option of the VMWare installer, but even after repairing, the problem is still there. I've also tried putting the NAT on a different VMNet interface and assign new subnets, but that did not work either.

I've created another VM, and it is showing exactly the same issue.

Does anyone have an idea of what might be wrong?

VMtools 8.3.12 + Ubuntu 10.10 -- Install Problems

UBUNTU 10.10

Linux Kernel 2.6.35-31-generic-pae

Always used standard vmtools not open-vm-tools.

We have several ubuntu linux servers that are not upgrading properly after the last ESXi updates to the hosts prompted a new tools version. They worked fine with 8.3.7, but now when the installers run I get a GRUB error on reboot and the GUI is all scrambled. Some of the users need the GUI so that is why it is needed. Do you think this is a problem with initrd after tools compiles it?

I built a new server using the 10.10 iso image and did the new tools install [this new server never had the older version of tools on it - so this may be why it works] and it worked with the gui installed. Can anyone give advice as to why existing servers can't upgrade?

I have attached a photo of the GRUB error on reboot.

I have attached a photo of the GUI all squiggly -- probably because xorg is not working right.

I've tried uninstalling gnome-common, gnome-utils, gdm, ubuntu-desktop and fluxbox. When re-installed it results in the same squiggly gui.

Also during the vmtools install, Xorg complains about not being able to find vmwlegacy_drv.so, even when it is in the /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers folder.

I am running out of things to try. Does anyone have suggestions?

The drive cannot find the sector requested.

I have a Blackberry enterprise server, running in Windows 2003 SP2, running on VMWare Server2. When doing a snapshot backup using AppAssure Replay4 application I am getting the following error in the Windows event viewer:

Thread: 5604

Logger: tevolib.tpalt

Context: PG=VolsWithInterval720Minutes Volume=\\?\Volume{54531876-fe55-11db-8f46-00188b19c44c}\ DriveLetter=G:

Source Location: TransmitPacketsAlternative.cpp:584

Details:

Transmission of snapshot data failed. Check the AppAssure event log on the Replay Core for more details. - The drive cannot find the sector requested.

The last statement says the drive cannot find the sector requested. It is a virtual machine, it has no physical drives. What does this error mean?

VMWare Server 2 continues to plague me

After 2 years, I decided to pull VMWare Server 2 off the shelf and give is another try. I installed the server and when I stared the application I had problems logging into the IVMware Infrastructioure Web Access.

1. While creating the virtual machine, I would get logged out several times until it was done creating with success.(I did add the computer name in the hosts table).

2. After having created the new virtual machine, there is no DVD to do the OS installation. It did come up with the USB controller.

3. While the virtuall machine is powered off, the tomcat6.exe application is using up 50% of the CPU capacity and once the machine is started, vmware-vmx.exe takes another 49% of the CPU capacity and both cores continue at 100% indefinitely until I power the virtual machine down again.

Anyone have a fix for these problems?

kernel 3.2 early excption 0d on vmware server and workstation

Hi all

I'm running debian lenny on vmware server 2 and all is working fine with my built kernel 2.6.35-14. I have built a new kernel 3.2.31 with quite the same options and it crashes on boot with an early exception 0d :

BIOS data check successful

Decompression Linux... Parsing ELF... done

Booting the kernel

PANIC: early exception 0d rip 10:ffffffff819b2547 error 0 cd2 0

The same behavior is occuring on vmware workstation but NOT on vmware ESXi...also, note that all is working fine on virtualbox and different physical servers.

after googling a lot, I have tried to pass the following options to kernel, but no change :

nosmep acpi=off

if it helps, I've been able to get different addresses of the exception (the 819b2547 is sometime different), but I don't remeber which parameters changed that.

Does anybody have an idea ?

thanks a lot

best regards

Julien

Guest VM uses 300% more memory

$

I have four hypervisor hosts. They are all running VMWare Server 2.0.2 Build 203138. Hosts 1-3 are Windows Server 2003 Enterprise SP2, 32-bit. Host 4 is Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard. I have 5 guest VMs: 1 each on Host 1-3, and 2 on Host 4 (a beefier host). All 5 VMs are clones of each other--copy and paste, boot up (well, edit .vmx files first and such). The guests are thus all *identical* other than that they have a different IP address, etc. The guests are CentOS 5.9.

Now then, all was hunky dory on Hosts 1-3. The guests were fine and run a certain application for us.

I copied-and-pasted one instance of the VM guest to Host 4, making two copies.

I booted both of those, and configured the guest (IP address, etc.).

So far, great. I now have 5 VMs instead of 3, running across a total of 4 hosts.

But I noticed that the *exact* same application running the *exact* same configuration on the VMs on Host 4 uses 3 times the memory as its clone brothers. 3 times!

I tried to address this in the application itself, which involves Java. But nothing there helped.

So, I am completely puzzled. To the guest VM (CentOS), there is NO difference from the other VMs. It's literally a copy-and-pasted clone of the others. Why in the world would the same application running under the same OS and completely copied use THREE TIMES the RAM?

The only difference I can think of is that hypervisor hosts 1-3 are 32-bit and hypervisor host (VMware Server host) #4 is 64-bit. But the guest is the same guest!

Does anybody have any idea why what should be as close to mirror image copies as possible would result in radically different application memory usage within the guest on one single host?

(NOTE: both the VM guests running on Host 4 have this higher memory usage. Guests 1-3, running respectively (one each) on Hosts 1-3, do not have the high memory usage in the application).

Thanks,

Dan

The selected file is not a valid virtual disk file

Hi!,

I'm having a problem with one of my virtual machines on VMWARE Server 2.

Suddenly, after a server crash, the machine didn't boot up correctly. Apparently something went wrong with the hard disk. I tried to remove and add again the hard disk, however, when I tried to add it it says:

"The selected file is not a valid virtual disk file. Please choose a different name"

Attached there are vmx, vmxf and vmdk files.

Any hint about this?

Workstation 9 and vmrun stop question

$

We're running a Windows Server 2012 and VMware Workstation 9.0.2 with 2 shared and 1 unshared VMs.

The shared VMs are on the C: and the other VM is on the D:

When I run "vmrun list" I get "Total running VMs: 1" which points to the unshared VM on D:

I take it vmrun does not see/recognize the shared VMs.

I'm trying to use "vmrun -T ws-shared stop" to shutdown one of the shared VMs but I'm not having any luck.

I've tried a number of different combinations but nothing has worked. This is the command that I'm trying to work with:

vmrun -T ws-shared -h https://<hostname>:8333/sdk -u username -p password stop "[standard]Server/Server 2008.vmx"

The command fails with "Error: Failed to connect to host or proxy"

Can someone please guide me in the right direction as to the correct format of the command, and if I need to make any additional changes before this works.

Do I need to do anything in regards to the port number/sdk for example?

Thanks

Can't login to Web Access after new install

I have done an RPM install of Server 2.0 on a fresh install of CentOS 5.2.

After the initial config, when I attempt to connect to http://127.0.0.1:8222, I get the Web Access login. When I login I get an error:

The VMware Infrastructure Web Service at "http://localhost:8222/sdk" is not responding (Connection Refused)

The troubleshooting I've done so far is:

vmware-auth is listening on port 902, webAccess is listening on port 8308, vmware-hostd is listening on ports 8222 and 8333.

The hostd log contains no errors and ends with:

--2008-10-02 11:23:34.032 'App' 3086161600 info-- BEGIN SERVICES

The webAccess proxy.log contains only this error:

[2008-10-02 10:45:40,123,http-8308-1<=>,RequestProcessor] Error processing action request /action/login : [ConnectException] Connection refused

Does anyone have a suggestion for my next step?

IPv6 connectivity between guest and host

$

Hi all,

Hope I got the right place, I find this forum structure very confusing. Anyway. Situation is this:

I have a dual-stack network using router advertisments, putting all systems on the 2001:388:d000:1100::/64 IPv6 subnet.

No firewalls are enabled on any of the systems within the network (any firewalling is being done at the border router).

VMWare Server 2.0 runs on an AMD64 desktop atop Gentoo Linux. Hostname: beast.redhatters.yi.org, IPs: 192.168.64.32 and 2001:388:d000:1100:6ef0:49ff:feef:847c.

Two VMWare guests run atop the server:

  • training3.redhatters.yi.org, IPs: 192.168.64.33 and 2001:388:d000:1100:6ef0:49ff:feef:847c/64 running Windows 2003 Server
  • metermaster.redhatters.yi.org, IPs: 192.168.64.35 and 2001:388:d000:1100:6ef0:49ff:feef:847c running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

Other systems on the same network:

  • My P4 laptop, vk4mslp2.redhatters.yi.org, IPs: 192.168.64.38 and 2001:388:d000:1100:208:dff:fe5c:851, running Gentoo
  • My netbook, zhouman.redhatters.yi.org, IPs: 192.168.64.36 and 2001:388:d000:1100:223:8bff:fe35:6f71, running Gentoo

I am using bridged networking, connecting the guests to the same physical LAN as the host and other systems.

The guests are able to talk to every other IPv6 capable host without issues. The Ubuntu VM frequently connects to the local Ubuntu mirror (on AARnet) via IPv6 when downloading updates, no problems there. Windows 2003 can also be accessed using RDP via IPv6 (using portproxy on the Windows guest) from either of the laptop or the netbook. e.g.

zhouman ~ # netstat -anlp | grep rdesktop
tcp6 0 0 2001:388:d000:110:37329 2001:388:d000:1100:3389 ESTABLISHED 17978/rdesktop

The guests however will not communicate with the host, nor vice versa, via IPv6. Via v4, everything is rosy, everything works. But when communicating between the host and guests, IPv6 traffic just stalls:

Driver_IRQL_Not_Less_Or_Equal - Minidump attached

$

I have a Windows Server 2008 64bit Datacenter edition server running in a VMWare Server 2 environment with a RHEL 5 host. I have just set this machine up, and I'm getting a blue screen, seemingly at random. The message is "Driver_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL." I had this same issue with a Server 2003 VMWare guest on the same physical host machine.

I'm also seeing the following:

Activation [N5Vmomi10Activatio

nE:0x1333b060] : Invoke done on

Throw vmodl.fault.SystemError

Result:

(vmodl.fault.SystemError) {

dynamicType = ,

reason = "Unknown error",

msg = ""

}

The server is an Active Directory Domain Controller. It also hosts the DNS and IIS roles, and is protected by Symantec Endpoint Protection. Attached are some of the minidump files from the Server 2003 installation. What other information, logs, etc can I provide to help with the diagnosis? It is somewhat important that I get this working properly, so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Custom vmnet as virtual dumb switch

$

Hi,

Under VMWare GSX Server and VMWare Server 1.0.x I used to set up multiple virtual machines to use the same "custom" vmnet (e.g., vmnet2, vmnet3), so they are connected and can communicate with each other for test purposes, without interference from or with the host.

I have been trying for the past few days to get this to work under VMWare Server 2.0. It appears that any vmnet that does not have "DHCP" or "NAT" enabled are not available to select, in adding a new virtual network card to a virtual machine.

What I need is to be able to hook up multiple virtual machines within the same host, to a "dumb switch" (which I used to do simply by hooking up virtual NICs to the same custom vmnets), so they can communicate with each other in isolation, but NOT enable DHCP or NAT because DHCP interferes with a test virtual machine functioning as a DHCP server and NAT breaks the total network isolation I need for testing purposes.

Am I doing something wrong, or was this useful functionality stripped from the new version of VMWare Server?

Eric

I am trying to create a new virtual machine on my Vmware 2 server that I just installed on Cent OS 5.1 and I cannot seem to access the datastores.

I have tried every angle but I get the same result.

Error

Exception of type Vmomi.Fault.InvalidArgument was thrown.

I did disable selinux, iptables, and did a yum update of gcc, make before installation. The installation went fine so far as I can tell and I was able to access it no problem with the Windows Virtual infrastructure Client version 2.0.2 just like I had on my ESX server.

Any help would be appreciated!!

Intermittent guest network connectivity loss under network load

Greetings Vmware experts,

Fairly new to both Linux and Vmware. I am having an odd issue that I cannot isolate on Vmware Server 2.

My Server 2008 guest is intermittently dropping the network connection with a large data transfer. During network file transfer my physical Vista 64 will be at 96% network utilization on 100Mbps link for about a min or so. The network will then drop to 0% for 5 seconds and pick back up to 90%. This occurs about every 10 seconds after first network drop. The transfer picks back up to 90% at first but gets slower and slower to the point of dropping the connection all together.

I have been jumping back and forth between network card or a software RAID (I/O) issue. Been using the onboard Broadcom NIC and recently obtained a Intel Pro1000 PT hoping it would resolve my issue. It has not.

Also note that I have not been able to have OpenSuse11/Vmware Server 2 retain network configuration with Host reboot. I must run vmware-config.pl have vmnets available.

Any insight as to why this is happening would be most appreciated. This maybe my push to purchasing an Adaptec HW RAID and ESXi 3.5

Blue screen (BAD_POOL_CALLER) when starting windows xp in vmware server 2

$

Since an unexpected reboot of the Linux machine (Ubuntu 8.10), the windows XP Professional that was installed in the vmware server 2 machine stopped working. Now everytimei turn it on, a blue screen appears, with the message "BAD_POOL_CALLER", and it keeps restarting itself. I am unable to start in safe mode, because the same blue screen appears...

Does anybody know the cause, or have any solution to repair the windows machine? I attached a snapshot of the error.

Thank you very much
