Stand Alone or VM

$

I've just inherited a mess of a network, but fortunately, some assets are on VMs.  Access to the machines is via VNC, RDP, SSH and/or console.  What I am wondering is, is there any way to tell once you are in as admin on a Windows server whether or not this is a VM or a "normal" non-virtualized server?  How about Linux?  What could I run on a Linux server to know that I was in VM, as opposed to a normal install?

Thanks for any help!

'operating system not found' message after image restore

$

I'm new to to VMware server. I used Drive Image xml to image my Windows 2003 server and then booted to the Ulitmate Boot CD for Windows in the VM to restore the image.

I used windows disk manager to mark the C partition active, but when I boot to the VM it tries to do a network boot.

I was able to install an XP VM without any problems and noticed that its drive type is listed as IDE while the 2003 server is SCSI.

Any ideas?

Disk I/O Latency increase

2-5 times a day I get a warning in the events log that looks like this...

Device naa.600508b1001c2be40929c423819e3359 performance has
deteriorated. I/O latency increased from average value of 5627
microseconds to 235837 microseconds.
warning

It's always the same device. This is running on an HP ML350 G6 and a RAID 1 configuration. 20GB RAM. Three VM guests.

I am using the ESXi 5.1 bits downloaded from HP.

We have replaced the System board, Drive Backplane and the connecting cable. The next option is to start replacing the hard drives.

Is there a configuration change I should be making.

I'm very new to this technology, so be kind

Thanks

vmdk file showing 0MB

I am unable to start my VM machine due to below error message

"Reason: 19 (No such device).
Cannot open the disk '/vmfs/volumes/4fc925da-08b6f598-348b-002564fd3fa1/ITS-Treasury/ITS-Treasury.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on."

In VM settings HDD is showing as 0MB, while it was 60GB before. If I am browsing data store I can see as below. This looks to me that vmdk file is 0MB but a file "----rdm.vmdk" is in its orignal size.

Dose anybody know how to start this VM. or we can recover vmdk from rdm.vmdk file.

Unable to delete "lock" files

$

I've a couple of old "lock" files from a long-dead host backup that I'd like to delete. However, whenever I attempt to delete them I get messages that indicate that I cannot do so.

Using a Windows 7 box I've tried the following (as a domain administrator):

Created a mapped drive (Z:) to the location (\\nasbox\VM).

Tried a simple "right-click and delete" - I get a message that indicates that the file is open in another program (it's not).

Run a subinacl command to grant full control of the file to the domain administrator - I get an error message that reads "Error : 1314 A required privilege is not held by the client".

Using a Linux box I've tried the following (as "root"):

Mounted the location to a mount point (/mnt/nasbox)

Ran an "ls -l" command to determine the owner and group of the file(s) - owner and group are "root", permissions are 0444.

Attempted a "chmod 666" of the files - I get an error message that indicates that permission is denied.

Attempted an "rm --force" of the file(s) - I get an error message that indicates that permission is denied.

It's not that these lock files take up a lot of disk space - they're only 11 bytes each. But they're unneccessary and, well, they make the directory look "messy".

Any ideas on how I can get rid of the files in question?

Thanks in advance.

Permissions problem! I locked myself out of one of the images.

Greetings,

I did a bone-headed thing... I was expirementing with permissions and in one of my "test" images I added "Users role Read-Only on This object" but I didn't realize that as an "Administrator" I am also a user and that "deny" permissions supersede allow permissions. Now I have no way to go back and delete that permission on the users group! I'd happily just delete this VM from my inventory but it won't let me do that either.

How do I remove the permission or remove the VM from my inventory? This is very frustrating!

Thanks!

After upgrading to firefox 3.6 I can't open up my virtual machine through the browser.

I downgraded to 3.5 and it worked.

This is the message I get:

Cannot access virtual machine console. The request timed out

The attempt to acquire a valid session ticket for * took longer than expected. If this problem persists, contact your system administrator.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Error while powering on: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

After installation of Windows 2008, my player operates fine. When I close the program and attempt to play it again, I get, "Error while powering on: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."  As far as I can tell, there are no other processes using the program.  I have uninstalled and re-installed the server but the problem continues. Any suggestions?

Convert a virtual disk from growable to preallocated - Failure

$

Hi,

I am using "vmware-vdiskmanager" to convert a virtual disk from growable to preallocated. I have had enough of the defrags and poor disk i/o.

To do this I have copied the vmwaredisk.vmdk file of 8.5 GB to D:\Dump, because spaces in (sub)Folder and File names are causing other problems (the D partition has 189 GB FREE space) and want the new file vmwaredisk_2.vmdk to be created in the same folder by putting in Command Prompt:

C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation>vmware-vdiskmanager -r D:\Dump\vmwaredisk.vmdk -t 2 D:\Dump\vmwaredisk_2.vmdk

Now I keep getting the same error message below (and I know I should have more than enough FREE space). Why is it telling me that the disk is full?

Creating disk 'D:\Dump\VMwareDisk_2.vmdk'

Failed to convert disk: An error occurred while writing a file; the disk is full
. Data has not been saved. Free some space and try again (0xd00000008).

Please your help because I really don't know what to do anymore!

Many thanks in advance,

Erik

VMware Server Web Access Service Not Starting

Hello -- I am having an issue where the Tomcat Apache Web Service won't start on my server. I am running on a Windows Small Business Server 2011. It has Apache Tomcat 6 installed. By looking at the logging for the Apache I received the below output:

I noticed that the Java options for the service show in the attached screenshot:

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I have been trying various options with the JVM, Classpath, and Java Options field.

Alternately, would you know of another way to manage virtual machines other than the web interface?

Thanks,

Vmware server 2 - Problem with snapshots

$

Hi,

I have a problem regarding snapshots in a virtual machine.

My server has the bellow  identity:

VMware Infrastructure Web AccessVersion 2.0.0Build 128374

VMware ServerVersion 2.0.1Build 156745

The virtual machine has two disks, one 140GB and one 65GB. My problem resides to the first one that included OS files too.

When I opened the folder of that disk, I found all these:

VMsnapshot.png

From a little search I did I found that there are some snapshots in that VM but here:

FromWithinVMserver.png

looks like there is no snapshot...

I tried stopping the machine and by using vmware-vdiskmanager.exe tool to merge all disk files to one (since no snapshots seems to exist) but the result when I used the new file, was a disk more that a year old.

Is there any way to merge all the old snapshots in order to create one disk file in the end?

Hi

I created an XP vm on a Vista 64 host and when I try to launch it status hangs at 95%... (the OS has not yet been installed that`s what I'm trying to do)

Does anyone knows what the problem might be ? Is there a log or something similar that I could look at to give me an idea of what the problem is ?

Thanks

ESXi or VMware Server on Big Machine

$

Okay, I am getting a replacment for my little 4 core 1U machine that I have run for the last 18 months and getting a large 16 core 48G machine, and now I have to figure out how to best utilize it.  Here is the issue, and I am interested in what people think.

The machine is supported with ESXi (in fact could have been purchased with it preinstalled) and comes with 500+G of SAS storage.  The virtual machines I am moving however are on VMware Server 2.0 RC 1, which means I will have to rebuild all them as they are HW Type 7, which isn't supported on ESXi.  I have 14 virtual machines today, and this represents several weeks of rebuilding if I have to start from ground zero.  Understand that the new server was sort of a surprise to me, I thought I was just going to be geting 2 more 1U pancake servers, so I hadn't been planning for this change.

The PROs for ESXi is the performance characteristics and bare metal install, but the big CON for ESXi is I have no Windows in my arsenal.  My two workstations are pure Linux machines, 13 of the 14 virtual machines are Linux and the 1 Windows virtual machine is fully taxed and belongs to another team who will likely be taking their license when their project ends.  I have no money to buy additional licenses but may be able to get buy with a trial license till the beginning of the year when I may be able to acquire a Windows license.  I know that next year some time VMware is supposed to have a control center for Linux for ESX, but I have to do something this year and would hate to have to do it twice.

Does it really make that much difference in performance, given that I am going from 4 cores to 16 cores, to jump to ESXi find a way to wrangle up the Windows license to manage it temporarily until the Linx client comes along and I can hopefully hook that into IBM System Director (the literature on IBM System Director seems to indicate that I need the VMware console as well as IBM Director).  What do you all think?

Cannot connect to any USB device on my virtual machines

Hallo,

need HELP.

i had 3 virtual machines (1xW2k3 DC and 2xW2k3 as an virtual Cluster) with Virtual Server 1.05 on my Laptop (XP SP2) created.

USB functions great.

Then our IT installs Vista SP1 on my Laptop. OK....no problem i thought...what a great optimism.

On the new installed Laptop i install the new Vmware Server 1.07 and import the old with Virtual Server 1.05 created virtual machines.

But after connecting an USB-Drive i wasn´t able to connect the device in the virtual machine...it was greyed out.

After severel trys to reanimate it i decide to install VMware Server 2.0. But the same Problem. In the Remote Console i can see what type of USB-Drive is connected like "Sandisk USB-Massstorage", but the connect Button is greyed out.

The problem i see is, that on the hostsystem the "VMmware USB-Device"-Driver is not installed and the guest-Systems think that he is installed.

All attempts were in vain to install this driver manually on the Laptop (host-system).

Can anyone help me?

Thanks Juergen

Then I disabled my wireless network card at home and I got the same error. "error opening the remote virtual machine .... an unexplained error occured"

Hi,

I have a problem with VMware server 2.0 running on Windows 2003: Guests do not start when VMware server starts. Instead vmauthd error is logged in event log and hostd.log.

I already checked the permissions on relevant VMware directories and re-install VMware server, but the problem persists.

Symantec Endpoint Protection is running on the same machine.

Thanks for any help!
