linux kernel panic only in VMWare environment (CentOS 5.3)

$

I i'm trying to install CentOS 5.3 in VMWare Server 2.x. The host system is running Windows 2000 SP4 with an AMD Athelon XP 1800 CPU, 1G RAM and an NVidia FX5200. Every time i try to install CentOS 5.3  the result is always the same, a kernel panic/kernel oops. I have other VM's running in the same host hardware without problem, but those VM's are running FC4 and previous RedHat versions.

As far i can diagnose the problem doesn't seams to be CentOS related. I believe this is true because i have tried to install CentOS 5.3 directly in the host system and i can reach the step where the partitions are created, stage that i can't reach when trying to install CentOS 5.3 in my VMWare Server 2.0 virtual machine.

I have tried to raise the RAM in use by the guest OS, but the problem persists. I have tried to disable acpi (setting the acpi=no as a boot option), doing the install using text mode, but the same problem, kernel panic.

Acording to the kernel panic diagnostic info the problem happens in function xor_sse_2.

The call trace shows the following:

-

apic_timer_interrupt

xor_sse_2

do_xor_speed

calibrate_xor_block

sys_init_module

syscall_call

Code: Bad EIP value

-

I have upploaded the kernel panic message as it has been printed in the VMWare Console.

I have tried to disable all kinds of acceleration in the VM configuration, changed the SCSI vitual controller type from BusLogic to LSI, but the same issue. I have searched for the functions reported in the call trace, and it seams that calibrate_xor_block is used inside module/driver md, so this must be a virtual hardware issue (disk, cdrom, etc). I have changed the virtual CDrom hardware from IDE to SCSI and now the guest OS can't find the CDRom nor the hard disk, but there is also no kernel panic!. Is there any LSI driver disk that can be used so the virtual SCSI cdrom and hardisk can be accessed?

Does any one has any hint?

Thanks

Mike

Revert to Snapshot not working properly

Hello everyone

I've made a VM machine to make images on, to get as clean images as possible. And during this process I've taken alot of snapshots, and reverted, but now it seems that the reverting doesnt work. It doesn't put the machine back in the state it was, even though the server says its reverted.

Any suggestions on this?

Centos 5.3 and guest os's freezing

$

Hi,

Since I have looked VMserver 2.0.2 compatibility guide I have used Centos 5.3 as my Host server however I have yet witnessed a guest OS session last long enough to complete an install.

The message log is left blank and the length of time and position of progress seems to differ.

I have tried USE_SHIPPED_GTK=yes or USE_SHIPPED_GTK = forced but this does not have an impact.

Any suggestions?

I have tried Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, Ubuntu 9.04, Ubuntu 9.10 and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

Literally the VM session just freezes and the mouse cannot even be captured into the session.

running vmware-vim-cmd as non-root

$

I have installed VMware Server 2.0.2 on CentOS 5.5 and configured a regular (non-root) user account as the VMware administrator.

This works fine when using the web access interface, but the command line command "vmware-vim-cmd" cannot be used.

Ideally, the user managing this VMware installation should be able to  use the command line interface without knowing the root password, just  as with the web interface. I have already added it to the root group and changed the permissions of /etc/vmware/ssl/rui.key to allow reading by the root group. Now if the user tries to run vmware-vim-cmd, it fails with the error message:

[ts@imladris ~]$ vmware-vim-cmd vmsvc/getallvms
Failed to login: FileIO error: Permission denied for file  : /var/run/vmware-hostd-ticket/52cd87fc-69cd-7d02-eaf4-e314168e5111
Failed to login: vim.fault.InvalidLogin

The directory /var/run/vmware-hostd-ticket has very strange permissions: 705 = rwx---r-x, i.e. full access for user root, no access for group root, read access for everybody else. It reverts back to that setting on its own each time I set it to something more sane.

If I run vmware-vim-cmd as root, it fails with:

[root@imladris ~]# vmware-vim-cmd vmsvc/getallvms
Failed to login: vim.fault.InvalidLogin

probably because root is not registered as a user in VMware.

Ideas?

Hi,

after a power failure, we have this issue on our vmware server..

We have installed 7 virtual machines, only 2 of them are now recognized and running.

for the other 5, we get an "configuration file cannot be found" error, and they are shown as

"Unknown (Inaccessible)"

"Unknown 1 (Inaccessible)"

"Unknown 2 (Inaccessible)"

"Unknown 3 (Inaccessible)"

"Unknown 4 (Inaccessible)"

instead of their proper names ...

Any suggestions ?

Win7/Srv2008 "Cannot execute scripts" Using shutdown vmwawre-vim-cmd

Hello All,

I'm having a troubling issue with the vmware-vim-cmd command on all my Windows 7 and Server 2008 machines.  I don't recall it being an issue in the past, but recently it has been.  Anytime I issue a vmware-vim-cmd power.shutdown command I will get an error message that the the guest cannot execute scripts and never shut down.  However, if I log into the guest and issue the exact same command it will shut down proplerly.  Also, for a undetermined period of time, I can issue the command to this same guest while not logged in.  It will shut down properly.  If it stays on for a few days this command will no longer work.

dmp files being created after uninstall

Hello,

I am not sure I am posting in the correct section but here goes.

We have a few servers that started running out of space on the C drive. After investigating we found that VMWare was still sending .dmp files every 5 minutes to the Default Users folder even though they had been converted to Hyper V long ago.

The servers are Windows Server2003, 64bit, SP2.

The only thing VMWare related item that I can still find on any of these servers is VMWare Tools. That service is disabled and the Tools software fails if I try to uninstall it.

I would like to remove/disable whatever is causing the dmp files to be created.

I am "assuming" it has something to do with the Tools but have not been able to figure much out by just Google searches.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Disk thrashing on Host and poor guest performance

$

Hi all

We have a Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise x64 host with 48GB memory, First data partition is 375GB (RAID1 120GB free) and second is 558GB (RAID1 50GB free)

Windows is managing the paging file and has set a 50GB pagefile on each data partition.

VMware server has 40GB reserved and is set to fit all virtual machine memory into reserved host ram.

We currently have 8 VMs running without an issue, using 32GB

When we start up a 9th, it takes a long time to load up and there is a significant amount of Hard Faults/sec that eventually recede to zero (after about 15/20 minutes) but performance of the 9th and the other VMs is affected - high CPU and poor overall performance exhibited as websites are slow to respond and timeout.

During all this the host CPU is not stressed

The VM starting up runs perfectly fine on my local machine using VMware player, and is a sysprepped image of the the other VMs.

Does anyone have any observations on why the disk thrashing is occuring and what I can do to remedy it?

Thanks

Assign valid IP addresses to virtual machines

Hello every one,

First of all I wanted to mention that I'm totally new to this virtualization thing and forgive me if this is a dumb question, but I'm really confused about that. So I have a dedicated server with 5 valid IP addresses that clearly one of them is used for the host (the mentioned dedicated server), now I have 2 virtual machines on this host and I need to assign each machine a valid IP address, Can you please tell me how can I do that?

Thanks in advance

Snapshot : Consolidated Helper - 0 How safe is it to delete this ?

$

Hello,

I would like to know how safe is it to delete this snapshot and what are the pre-requisites for this.

We are using Veeam backup in our environment and it has created serveral hidden snapshots after the hidden snapshots are removed by "delete all" we are still lett with this snapshot.

VMware KB:     Delete All snapshot operation results in a Consolidate Helper snapshot when a datastore has insufficient …

The above article describes the exact situation we are facing in your environment now.

I would like to know how to safely remove it.

I've included the screen captures for your reference.

Re: Removing Consolidate Helper - 0

this discussion is very useful to understand how to remove the snapshot, but in my case its thick provisioned disks.

since its a production server i would like to know

1.what are the risks involved in deleting Consolidated-helper -0 snapshot.

2.pre-requisites on datastore level, provisioning level that are to be considered .

Requesting some guidance.

Thanks.

Oracle Licensing under VMWare

$

Dear VMWare community,

We are a development team of 5 in a company of around 1000 people. We are using VMWare on IBM Blade machines for development purposes. In the virtual machines we have installed several Oracle Enterprise and Standard edition databases. Now Oracle has performed an audit on us and the result, in a nutshell, is that the licensing model from Oracle has changed and we have to pay retroactively about $1,3 Million for the wrong use of their licenses on VMWare. We are astonished with these results. Could you please give us some advice?

Performance tuning in Server 2.0

Everyone has their favorite list of performance tweaks for the old 1.0 Server product.  MemTrimRate, pshare, etc.

Has anyone applied these tweaks to the 2.0 product?  Do they still help with performance?  Do they even still exist as tweaks?

I posted this question back in the RC2 forums and nobody ever responded.  Is nobody interested in improving VM performance under 2.0?

I have instaled Vmware server 2.01 in Ubuntu 9.04 - Jaunty Jackalope, but  the virtual machines have problems to connect : "The network bridge on device vmnet0 is temporarily down because the

bridged Ethernet interface is down. The virtual machine may not be able

to communicate with the host or with other machines on your network".

When I try to config again the vmware with "sudo /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl", appears the next:

The following VMware kernel modules have been found on your system that were

not installed by the VMware Installer.

Please remove them then run this installer again.

vmci

vmnet

vmmon

I.e. - 'rm /lib/modules/2.6.28-15-generic/misc/<ModuleName>.{o,ko}'

Windows 2003 Standard 4 CPU 4 GB memory limitation

$

Windows 2003 Standard has a 4 cpu and 4 GB memory recognition limitation.  But when virtualizing a physical server that is running Windows 2003 Standard, would it be possible to allocate more than 4 processors and more than 4 GB memory and then do something, for example with a parameter to customize how the virtual machine is using processor count, memory, through the VM properties > General > Configuration Parameters > adding or editing existing params such as the cpuid.coresPerSocket ... ???  Simply setting the memory to 8 GBs on a Windows 2003 Standard virtual machine would simply be a waste of resources, yes?  Can anything be done from the virtual side to get over these 2003 Standard limits?

The drive cannot find the sector requested.

I have a Blackberry enterprise server, running in Windows 2003 SP2, running on VMWare Server2. When doing a snapshot backup using AppAssure Replay4 application I am getting the following error in the Windows event viewer:

Thread: 5604

Logger: tevolib.tpalt

Context: PG=VolsWithInterval720Minutes Volume=\\?\Volume{54531876-fe55-11db-8f46-00188b19c44c}\ DriveLetter=G:

Source Location: TransmitPacketsAlternative.cpp:584

Details:

Transmission of snapshot data failed. Check the AppAssure event log on the Replay Core for more details. - The drive cannot find the sector requested.

The last statement says the drive cannot find the sector requested. It is a virtual machine, it has no physical drives. What does this error mean?
