Can't get rid of xxx-00001.vmdk file

$

I had all my guest OS data in one vmdk file (I'll call it server.vmdk) until last Tuesday, 12/14/10. Since then, the original server.vmdk file still exists with the date time stamp of 12/14/10.  All the changes made to this server since that time exist in a file called server-00001.vmdk.  How do I get the latest changes merged back into server.vmdk?

The only changes since 12/14/10 were in one database file, so I backed up the database file on a different server. I shut down the guest OS,  then told VMware to use the server.vmdk file for the hard disk instead of server-00001.vmdk.  When I booted up the guest OS, the database was dated 12/14/10, which is what I expected.  I then copied the databae back onto the guest OS.  Now, server.vmdk is still dated 12/14/10, and again the changes were posted to server-00001.vmdk.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Transparent Page sharing disabled (PSHARE: deactivated)

While many discussions have gone here about deactivating page sharing, I have the opposite problem: it seems that despite having put the sched.mem.pshare = TRUE option in the VMX file page sharing does not get activated on my Vmware Server 2 (Linux Host). At VM started I always have the "PSHARE: deactivated" message.

Anything I can/should check? Would some kernels/architectures have specific setups which make vmware-vmx decide to disable this option despite the settings in the configuration files?

Any hints greatly appreciated.

All VMs Hang At 95 Percent at Power On

$

I've been running vmware server 2.0.2 for a couple of years and everything worked great up until last Friday.  My host system got hit with a virus which has since been cleaned.  After getting rid of the virus all my vms hang at 95% when starting up.

Here are my system details:

Host OS: Windows XP x64 SP2

Hardware: Asus M2N-E, AMD Athlon 64 x2, 8GB Ram, 3Ware and Highpoint Raid controllers

Guests: Varied (example in attached log files is an XP64 OS but have the same problem with 32bit XP and CentOS guests)

After reading several other posts here and around the web here is what I've tried so far (not necessarily in this order):

  1. Completely uninstalling and reinstalling vmware server, including the "/c" option to clear the registry, and manually removing remaining vmware files and registry entries.
  2. Reinstalling Windows SP2 (no SP3 available for xp64) and running all windows updates
  3. Reinstalling latest nvidia drivers (MB has NVIDIA chipset)
  4. Moving the vms to different disks and adding/removing them from the inventory

It seems obvious that the virus (or the recovery process) knocked something out of whack but I have not been able to track it down.  I've attached my latest hostd.log and vmware.log files for my "wxp64_jm_mabot" vm.  I get similar log entries when I try running other vms.  Here are a couple of note:

Sep 27 09:06:15.421: vcpu-0| VIDE: (0x1f0) OUTB Cmd 0xb0, Unknown ATA Command on drive 0
Sep 27 09:06:30.984: vcpu-0| DecoderIsInvalidInstruction:686 0xfffffadfe62b821e #UD f184aa8f sz=6 ct=1

If I let it sit at 95% for awhile new "DecoderIsInvalidInstruction" log entries are added periodically.

Please review and let me know if anything stands out that indicates what I should try next.

Thank you!

Cannot Start VM - File Handle Invalid

$

I have a recurring problem with VMware Server.

The host server is Windows 2008 R2 x64 and the VMs are stored in a datastore hosting on a separate server running Windows 2008 Standard.

If the host server is rebooted without the VMs having been shutdown, upon the host server rebooting I am unable to start any of the VMs.  I get a message that an error has occurred, and that the file handle for the .vmdk is invalid.

I can browse to the share to which the datastore is mapped, and the permissions are correct, as the VMs work fine before the host server is rebooted.

I have tried deleting the .lck files/folders - didn't work.

I have tried removing/readding the VMs in the inventory - didn't work.

The only thing I've found that works is to create a new folder on the remote server, copy the folders to it, create a new datastore on the host server, add the VMs to the inventory from the new datastore, and then they will start with no problem (after indicating at the behest of VMware Server's query that they were copied).

Any idea why this happens, and if there is a better solution that creating a new datastore each time this happens?

Thank you in advance.

VMware server 2.0.2 Bridged network not working

$

Hi,

I've just installed VMware server 2.0.2 on Ubuntu 11.04 Desktop and setted up 2 bridged network. One is bridged to a Ethernet card and the other one is bridged to a wireless card. My problem is that my virtual machine are unable to connect to the bridged network. I can set up an IP and access it from the host computer but not from the other computer on the network. When I am trying to use DHCP to set up a connection, it failed. The connection work perfectly on the host but not in the guest. I've tried on both the ethernet and wireless and nothing is working.

Can someone help me? Why does my bridged network don't work?

Thanks.

Failed to expand vmdk

Dear VMWare community,

I wanted to expand the virtual disc of a vm. I'm using VMWare Server 2 on Windows 7 (64-bit) and the vm runs Ubuntu 10.04. I had assigmed 20GB for the vmdk but I run out of space so I wanted to increase it. I used both the command line and the GUI to do it, but both fail.

I get an "Unknown error 0x45d000900000001 always at 73% (even if I change the exteded size)

C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Server>vmware-vdiskmanager.exe -x 32GB "C:\Virtual Machines\ubuntu 10.04\ubuntu 10.04.vmdk"
  Grow: 73% done.Failed to expand the disk 'C:\Virtual Machines\ubuntu 10.04\ubuntu 10.04.vmdk': Unknown error (0x45d000900000001).

I tried the same command for a second vm I had and it worked without any problem.

That's my vmx file in case you need it:

Migrate ProxMox VMs to VMWare???

I see plenty of links talking about how to migrate VMWare VMs to ProxMox, but I haven't been able to find even one in the other direction!

Can anyone provide instructions for migrating a ProxMox VM to VMWare Server?

vmdk file showing 0MB

I am unable to start my VM machine due to below error message

"Reason: 19 (No such device).
Cannot open the disk '/vmfs/volumes/4fc925da-08b6f598-348b-002564fd3fa1/ITS-Treasury/ITS-Treasury.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on."

In VM settings HDD is showing as 0MB, while it was 60GB before. If I am browsing data store I can see as below. This looks to me that vmdk file is 0MB but a file "----rdm.vmdk" is in its orignal size.

Dose anybody know how to start this VM. or we can recover vmdk from rdm.vmdk file.

Performance tuning in Server 2.0

Everyone has their favorite list of performance tweaks for the old 1.0 Server product.  MemTrimRate, pshare, etc.

Has anyone applied these tweaks to the 2.0 product?  Do they still help with performance?  Do they even still exist as tweaks?

I posted this question back in the RC2 forums and nobody ever responded.  Is nobody interested in improving VM performance under 2.0?

I installed VMware-server-2.0.0-116503 on Dell Inspiron 518 Quad Core Vista Home Premium back in October. It worked and I installed XP VM which also worked. I got distracted and just got back to it today and I can't get the Host Service to start. I uninstalled and reinstalled twice. Searched forums - can't find anything pertinent. Discovered a new build VMware-server-2.0.0-122956 so downloaded it, uninstalled rebooted, installed, rebooted and still no start.

Are there any wise souls out there?

Hi there,

Anybody knows what this error message means:

"msg.vmxaiomgr.retrycontabort.rudeunplug:Operation

on file "
.\PhysicalDrive1" failed.

If the file resides on a remote file system, please make sure your

network connection and the server where this disk resides are

functioning properly. If the file resides on removable media, reattach

the media.

Choose Retry to attempt the operation again.

Choose Abort to terminate this session.

Choose Continue to forward the error to the guest operating system."

I guess it wants to say that there are problems with the disk attached to the guest. It happened before, I checked the disk for errors but none were found.I restarted the guest and after a couple of tries it was back on. Now it happened again.

Norton Ghost 12 for P to V?

$

I want to perform a P to V of my old laptop (XP pro) before I decommision it and tried using the facility in ghost 12 to create a vmware disk.  However the process did not go as planned.

Although the laptop has an ide disk, when I tried to start the VM I'd created it failed saying the disk was a scsi disk.  So I recreated using a scsi profile for the disk, and it started up.  The windows installer started to setup new hardware, it finally rebooted, but now blue screens complaining about a device driver.  I suspect the scsi driver is not available.

Is Ghost 12 capable of performing a PtoV, or just creating a disk which you can add to an existing VM?  If it can do a PtoV, how do I do it?

I am struggling here and really need help.I have Ubuntu 8.10 desktop installed and successfully installed VMware server 2.0. I built a Ubuntu guest VM and want to use my USB webcam in the VM but no matter what I try it doesn't work. Can someone tell me the specific steps in the host and in the guest to get a USB webcam working in a Ubuntu VM? It's a logitech 4000 webcam.

I've tried so many suggestions on these forums and the ubuntu forums to try and get it working and nothing has helped.

How to Install Ubuntu Linux on Windows XP using VMware Server - Thanks to cmsproducer

$

Ubuntu linux installation is painless as explained in this document. Ubuntu is a valuable and completely free distribution of Linux. It is open-source and software libre meaning that it's free of any limitations that GPL or LGPL may pose. Like other Linux distributions, Ubuntu will enable you to text your applications in Linux.

Challenge

The common challenge for many users is that fact that one must either configure dual-boot into windows or Ubuntu Linux, or set-aside a PC for use with this operating system. Often, especially for smaller companies and consultancies that may not have the resources, it is not possible to set-aside a PC system just for testing or learning Linux if that is not the popular platform within the organisation. Also, it may sometimes be necessary to switch between several operating system during development or testing, and this may not be possible in dual-boot environments, or if you are away from the office (in a situation where it's not possible to have your multiple systems).

Solution

To enable to simultaneously use of multiple operating systems on on computer, there are a number of low-level applications in the market; especially for Apple Computers to run Windows (More of these will be added especially now that Apple is using Intel Chips and shipping Microsoft Windows bundled with their new systems). Besides the fact that it costs money to enable Windows to run on a Mac, this feature did not exist on Windows Systems to enable them to run other OS for free until VMware started distributing it's Server.

Installation Procedure

  • Download and install the VMWare Server (You will be required to create an account in order to receive a registration key - necessary to run the software)

  • Install the server software (this will take a long time and also ask you to close common applications such as Mozilla, Outlook, OpenOffice)

  • Enter the product registration key when requested

  • You are not equipped with the VMWare server and you are ready to install operating systems

Installing Ubuntu Linux in the VMWare server

  1. Start the VMWare Server and from the home menu, select 'New Virtual Machine' and follow the instructions that follow to install a CD of Ubuntu Linux (If the CD auto-launches within Windows, cancel it and DO NOT install it in Windows lest you erase your physical disk)

  2. Make sure that you allocate enough disk space for the Ubuntu Linux installation partitions without compromising the other windows applications on your system (make the decision based on how much idle disk-space you have).

  3. Whenever Ubuntu 'talks' of formating the drive and erasing all information, do not be scared, it's only taking about the space allocated to it within the VMWare virtual machine environment

  4. The Ubuntu Linux installation will take some time to complete, and it's not any different or complex compared to installing Windows XP

  5. Make choices for screen-resolution, networking and RAM usage based on the resources that your system has, how often you will be using Ubuntu Linux Compared to your Windows applications, and your network setup

  6. When done, Ubuntu will restart the machine (all within the VMWare virtual machine without restarting your physical PC) and you should have a nice working installation of Ubuntu Linux within your Windows O

  7. The VMWare Server allows you to break free from the Ubuntu Linux or any other Virtual machine you may be using (to use your physical Windows machine) by pressing CONTROL + ALT

Powering off host - shutdown guest

$

Hi,

I'm having a problem when I shutdown the host system, because the guest system don't shutdown the OS in the best way, these just power off.

I'm using VMware Server 2 Build 156745 over linux (Fedora 10) as host system with 2 VM's, the first Windows 2003 Server R2 and the second Linux Ubuntu Server 8.10, both with VMware Tools installed. I have configurated these VM's to shutdown when the host shutdown too, but it doesn't happen.

What could be happening here?

Thanks...

I have a file sync software that can handle vss writers.  The software is called Super Flexible File Synchronizer.  Can someone please give me what would be the proper steps for me to do a file sync so I have the test.vmdk files on another server, so I can turn them all on in case of a disaster.

I want to make sure that these servers will start properly without issues.

Thanks for any help!!
