Revert to Snapshot not working properly

$

Hello everyone

I've made a VM machine to make images on, to get as clean images as possible. And during this process I've taken alot of snapshots, and reverted, but now it seems that the reverting doesnt work. It doesn't put the machine back in the state it was, even though the server says its reverted.

Any suggestions on this?

Greetings Slasky

Hi,

I have configured 2 Linux RHEL5 guests on windows host running VMWare Server 2.0. Is it possible to configure a gigabit network between the 2 guests?

Thanks in advance,

VM Workstation 11.0 freezing sometimes for 3 min.

Hi,

i have this problem since long time.  The Machine freeze for exactly 2 min. 56 sec. and than is back to normal almost one time every day.

We are about 20 people connecting via RDP (the host is win 7 guest is SBS 2011).

I have tried everthing with the processor speed setting (i was thinkin was the problem) since in the host machine (SBS 2011) it's saying  "kernel event: system time as changed from bla bla bla to bla bla bla" error when it freeze.

But in the same time, the vmware log info is :

Any one has an idea how the problem can be solved??

Just for your info: for the time keeping i have tried --  setting CPU speed in config file  -- PTSC or not PTSC  -- Mainberg time keeping software  --   sync or no sync with the host machine  --  turbo Intel settings or no turbo  -- Hyper Threding or not Intel HT --

I'am actually working at this problem since 6 month without success... Now i think maybe the issue is not the processor speed (xeon E3 1246) but some how the SSD disk (new samsung pro 850, VM installed on separate SATA disk from host).

Last not least,  after some changes the VM was going veeeery slowly but no problem with the freezing....  and at some moment, all alone without doing nothing,  the VM machine start to work at normal speed but the freezing/kernel time problem went back!   aaaaahhh!!

HELP! thnx!

Does Any one know how to add a machine to the inventory from the client... I have looked but cannot find it. Any help would be appreciated. I really don't like the web client and I have esx servers so I already have the infrastructure client installed on my machines.

vmware-cmd Utility Gone?

Not only that, but it seems vmware-mount has also vanished from VMware Server 2. The reason I'm looking for these is that I'm trying to port a backup script I wrote for VMware Server 2 wich stops, shrinks, copies and then starts a VM. Does anyone know if the new WMware Server 2 has any command line tools which can stop and start a VM, and shrink a VM?

Thanks

Error trying to increase vmdk hard disk capacity "file already exists"

I'm trying to expand a SCSI VMDK on VMware Server 2 build 122956 running on Windows Server 2008 x64 that does not have any snapshots. When I shut down the VM, go to edit Hard Disk 1 (SCSI 0:0) and select Increase Capacity, add space and then hit OK I get the following error:

"Reconfigure Virtual Machine" failed to complete

Operation failed becuase file already exists

The guest is also Windows Server 2008 x64 and I have not been able to find any posts here or elsewhere indicating this error. Any help is much appreciated.

Automatic shutdown of vmware guests does not work

I have a vmware server 2 on ubuntu 8.04.1 64 Bit. I configured 5 vms to automatically start and shutdown when the host is rebooting. The automatic start works fine. However, the shutdown seems to be working wrong. When I enter /etc/init.d/vmware stop the shutdown is stopped with the message "At least one instance of VMware Server is still running. Please stop all running instances of VMware Server first." 4 of the 5 vms have vmware tools installed. If I shutdown the one without vmware tools, the behavior is the same.

Any idea how this can be fixed?

IO throughput issues with VMWare Server 2 and SLES 11 on Host and RedHat on the client.

I am unsure if this is the best way to measure this but I have VMWare Server 2 installed on an SLES 11 (64-bit) host.  This host has 6 GB of ram with 5 GB allocated for VMWare.  I have 2 SATA disks that are software raided (raid 1).  I have a VMGuest running 32-bit Redhat Enterprise Linux with 1 GB of ram allocated.  I run into the following performance differences when I perform testing.  Please note that this box is effectively completely quiet barring the other VMs running and minimal activity on the host.  I don't think that this would cause what I'm seeing

Measurement of read performance on the host (showing the raw storage as well as the logical volume):

This is the typical number, btw.

hdparm -tT /dev/sda2

/dev/sda2:

Timing cached reads:   2138 MB in  2.00 seconds = 1069.57 MB/sec

Timing buffered disk reads:  208 MB in  3.02 seconds =  68.98 MB/sec

/dev/lvmpool/open_client_test:

Timing cached reads:   2292 MB in  2.00 seconds = 1147.19 MB/sec

Timing buffered disk reads:  186 MB in  3.01 seconds =  61.86 MB/sec

Measurement of read performance on the guest:

This is approx. the typical number but is on the high side of what I've seen.

hdparm -tT /dev/sda1

/dev/sda1:

Timing cached reads:   3708 MB in  2.00 seconds = 1853.38 MB/sec

Timing buffered disk reads:   94 MB in  3.07 seconds =  30.58 MB/sec

I have the following settings on the Host based on various advice I've read elsewhere.  None of these settings appear to make any difference:

prefvmx.minVmMemPct = "100"

prefvmx.allVMMemoryLimit = "5385"

prefvmx.useRecommendedLockedMemSize = "TRUE"

mainMem.partialLazySave = "TRUE"

mainMem.partialLazyRestore = "TRUE"

mainMem.useNamedFile = "FALSE"

tmpDirectory="/dev"

On the guest, I have added the following which has also made no difference (I initially used all stock settings and had 2 GB allocated):

scsi0:0.writeThrough = "TRUE"

mem.ShareScanTotal=0

mem.ShareScanVM=0

mem.ShareScanThreshold=4096

sched.mem.maxmemctl=0

sched.mem.pshare.enable = "FALSE"

On top of this I have preallocated all storage, created a single SCSI disk (13GB), used LSI Logic as the scsi controller, and created a dedicated logical volume to load this on.  It's not that the performance is that horrible but I would expect that performance would be perhaps 80-90% of host given that the system isn't heavily loaded and any IO overhead would be seen on the host as well.

Does anyone have any ideas?  I have seen a lot of questions on the topic of IO but it seems like, typically, the performance is improved by making the above changes while these changes didn't appear to help me out at all.

64 bit guest o/s on a 64 bit host

I have created a virtual machine and I am trying to install Windows 2008 64 bit operating system. I get the error "Atempting to load a 64-bit application,however this cpu is not compatible with 64 bit mode.

The host machine is running Windows 2008 64-bit.  And I know that the host's CPU is 64-bit compatible. Is there something in the configuration that needs to be changed in order to install a 64-bit o/s on a virtual machine?

Hi,

I have been searching this issue for about a week and can't find any info, hope U can help. I created a windows 2003 std 64 guest on a windows 2003 std 64 bit host. I moved the windows 64 bit guest to another server running windows 2003 std 32 bit and I get this error " Attempting to load an x64 operating system, however this CPU in not compatible with x64 mode" both servers are HP Proliant with Intel Xeon processors that support EM64t and VT. Any ideas? Or is it just not possible?

Thanks!

VMware Server awfully slow and connection drops

I installed the VMware Server 2.0.2 (Build 203138), including Web  Access 2.0.0 (Build 128374) to my Ubuntu Linux server (2.6.32-24-server  #39-Ubuntu SMPx86_64). The server host has no console GUI, it's just  acting as server. The server seems to be running fine. I can log in from  a different machine (WinXP using Internet Explorer) and see the virtual  machines overview.

However,  whatever I click, it takes ages to load (client and server are  connected via GigE, just two hubs, no weird networs etc). I often see  error messages in my logfile /var/log/vmware/hostd.log. For example,  when I log in, I read:

I am really clueless.  I am using VMware for some time now, a Windows XP machine hosts a  virtual Linux. This was an attempt to do it the other way, but at the  current state, this is not usable. The problem doesn't seem to be  relared to any particular activity as it happens even when I do nothing  after login.

Does anybody have any idea where to search for the problem?

Hi everyone,

Im trying to copy a file from Host to Guest. Befor doing that, I reverted to a snapshot and started the machione with the nogui option (Everything over vmrun). But when Im trying to transfer the file, the error occurs, but the vmrun list command tells me that the vm is up and running!

Any ideas what it could be and how to fix it?

Hi All,

I am receiving this message on one of my vmware servers, and I am desperate to access this drive again as there are database files I need to access that I don't have a copy of anywhere else.

I have tried running windows recovery, and then loading the scci drivers but no hard drive is detected.

Is there any other way to recover this server ?

thanks in advance

Getting error "vcpu-0:DoubleFault @ 0x4020:0xc9420" on vmware server 1.0.6

I was having no issues with vmware on windows 7, recently i brought windows 8 and while trying to start vm i get this error message "vcpu-0:DoubleFault @ 0x4020:0xc9420".

I am trying to open an existing Linux (RHEL), it starts normally and after a minute it throws the error message. i had tried to install new one(Red hat linux), still the same error. (I had tried by disabling digital diver enforcement).

Can anyone please let me know the solution for it.

For example, when I log in, I read:

but I have not any "settings" file in my install dir /usr/local/lib/vmware. After two more lines like this:

I am really clueless. I am using VMware for some time now, a Windows XP machine hosts a virtual Linux. This was an attempt to do it the other way, but at the current state, this is not usable. The problem doesn't seem to be relared to any particular activity as it happens even when I do nothing after login.

Does anybody have any idea where to search for the problem?

VMware Server Issues

Maybe I am mistaken, but it appears to me that vmserver 2 is actually a step back, forcing some users to buy other products. On server 1 it was possible to configure it to be used by several users (via console), but with server 2 it needs special permissions, and these do not work, effectively restricting usage to a single user. With Linux guests it is not a big issue, but Windows guests can only be accessed through console.

Maybe I have something incorrectly configured, or maybe I do not understand something:

1. I cannot add anyone to permissions

2. I found no permissions suitable for a guest user (like a student in the class)

3. I found no option to make machines auto starting at the host boot.

4. Server 1 had clear instruction how to access console through the firewall tunnel - server 2 doc is mum, and new model of access makes it much more difficult - I guess I need to open several tunnels (4 ?) before I can install viewer and see anything.

I installed it twice on two different versions of Linux (FC2 - vmserver 1.0.6 worked ok) and RHEL 4.7, same effect. Browser manuals, vmware website, but nothing. It does not like accidental oversight, rather change of the policy.

Another issue - suggesting ESXi might be rather tricky proposition - for the shool which reuses old monitors there is very little chance that they can afford high end servers, and all machines on HCL are new, high end, and on the expensive side. What are the chances of ESXi running on generic no-name clone, even recent vintage ?

NAT Port Forwarding http:80

I'm trying to setup nat port forwarding for http:80 from my host (Windows Server 2003) to my guest Ubuntu Linux 10.04. The problem that I'm having when doing this is that once I setup the port forwarding in the networking tool NAT won't start.

I'm using VMWare Server 2.0

Is this a known bug and or does anyone know how I can make NAT start?

ESXi 5.1 on HP (ProLiant DL380p Gen8) Hardware Monitoring / Health Status Issues

I am having trouble with getting accurate hardware monitoring with ESXi 5.1 on an HP (ProLiant DL380p Gen8) server. The build installed is 799733 (HP version, with HP Tools installed)

I am using this server as an example, however we have other servers that don't appear to be showing correct hardware information either. We use N-Able for our RMM software, and I noticed that it detected 5 power supplies for this server (4, 5, and 6 showed normal while 1 and 2 showed a failure). Also, all of the fans were showing a failed status for health state as well. I called N-Able and they looked into it and basically told me that the UI was displaying the information given by VMware, and I would need to contact VMware to see why it wasn't giving out the correct health information.

When I vSphere directly to the Hyper Visor I can see that N-Able may be correct. Under Power it shows the following information:

In N-Able it detected power supply 1-2, 4,5, & 6. 1 & 2 show failed, the rest show that they are fine. There are not 5 power supplies in this server. Also, N-Able detected 6 fans and shows the following for all of them.

N-Able pulls Fan and Power Supply status directly from the ESXi via
