ovftool "Couldn't resolve host name

$

I'm trying to create a new VM and have started with this command

ovftool untanble.ova vi://username:password@ESXhost

I've tried all sorts of options after the command but it always returns:

Error: Curl error: Couldn't resolve host name

What does this mean?

Thanks,

Brian

i cannot connect client to domain

Hi I am new to oracle. I have just started studying for my AD exam so decided to follow train signal and set up a network. I have 2 DC set up both speaking to one another and updating through active directory. I have now set up Vista client and it will not join the domain I get the following message

Note: This information is intended for a network administrator. If you are not your network's administrator, notify the administrator that you received this information, which has been recorded in the file C:\Windows\debug\dcdiag.txt.

The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate an Active Directory Domain Controller for domain globomantics.com:

The error was: "This operation returned because the timeout period expired."
(error code 0x000005B4 ERROR_TIMEOUT)

The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.globomantics.com

192.168.5.3
192.168.5.2

Verify that this computer is connected to the network, that these are the correct DNS server IP addresses, and that at least one of the DNS servers is running.

I have been looking now for about 5 days and have tried every single answer solution I have found on the net but I get the same error, I have even tried a windows 7 client and have had the same result.

the 2 DC I have are set up as follows
NY-DC1
IP 192.168.5.2
default gateway 192.168.5.1
preferred DNS 192.168.5.2
alt DNS 192.168.5.3

NY-DC2
IP 192.168.5.3
default gateway 192.168.5.1
preferred DNS 192.168.5.2
alt DNS 192.168.5.3

client Wins Vista
preferred DNS 192.168.5.2
alt DNS 192.168.5.3
I am also getting a message now to update my Ethernet but have no idea how to get onto the internet from the VM. I have dropped the driver into the VBOX folder but it will not work. I have also installed Guest additions which I thought was the updated drivers.

this is becoming a pain can somebody help

Workstation 9 and vmrun stop question

$

We're running a Windows Server 2012 and VMware Workstation 9.0.2 with 2 shared and 1 unshared VMs.

The shared VMs are on the C: and the other VM is on the D:

When I run "vmrun list" I get "Total running VMs: 1" which points to the unshared VM on D:

I take it vmrun does not see/recognize the shared VMs.

I'm trying to use "vmrun -T ws-shared stop" to shutdown one of the shared VMs but I'm not having any luck.

I've tried a number of different combinations but nothing has worked. This is the command that I'm trying to work with:

vmrun -T ws-shared -h https://<hostname>:8333/sdk -u username -p password stop "[standard]Server/Server 2008.vmx"

The command fails with "Error: Failed to connect to host or proxy"

Can someone please guide me in the right direction as to the correct format of the command, and if I need to make any additional changes before this works.

Do I need to do anything in regards to the port number/sdk for example?

Thanks

Hi

I created an XP vm on a Vista 64 host and when I try to launch it status hangs at 95%... (the OS has not yet been installed that`s what I'm trying to do)

Does anyone knows what the problem might be ? Is there a log or something similar that I could look at to give me an idea of what the problem is ?

Thanks

chkdsk running but don't know why.

I know this is off subject, but I hope some of the server experts will be kind enough to offer some advice.

I am running XP x64 (Based on Server 2003) and occasional I experience very long boot times. When I installed IE7 long ago the reboot in the middle took about 1.5 hours. My system was busy the whole time with lots of HDD activity. Recently I went to do a defrag and when I clicked on Analyze, I recieved a message that said I needed to run chkdsk. I then re-booted and chkdsk ran and displayed a few messages including saying it had found and repaired a corrupt index. This took several minutes. Later I started seeing BSODs (Stop 1E) and several re-boots that took 1.5 hours or more. Last night I read up on chkdsk and scheduled it (chkdsk c: /f) and re-booted. This took about 1.5 hours. When I could, I issued a Turn Off via the Start menu. This took more than a hour (went to bed - missed the end). My research revealed that if the 'dirty bit' is set, chkdsk runs automatically at the next restart. I looked in my System log and found no disk errors. I did find a pair of ntsf errors (file system is corrupt - please run chkdsk) for 10-15-08, around the time this all started. I think I know what caused this error (a fat finger on my part lead to a quick restart), but I do not know why I am seeing the very long re-boot times occasional (e.g., IE7 install), but I do think it is chkdsk running. I have looked for the chkdsk logs with no luck.

I hope someone can advise me as to where the log is as well as to why I see the running of chkdsk with no device errors.

My C disk is a RAID0 pair of WD Raptors, about 150GB total space.

Thanks much, John.

Bridged Network not working with wifi card in Linux host

$
0
0

I have installed vmware server 2 in Ubuntu Server 8.04 with both Bridged Network and NAT. Both VM Networks are the default ones and are configured to use my wifi.

The problem is that within my VMs, I am unable to reach the Internet, nor the LAN.

Facts:

  • Ubuntu host can access the network without problems from the wifi.

  • This machine has 2 network cards. An Ethernet and a wifi.

  • Ethernet is down as I only use wifi here.

  • VMs can access the Internet and NAT LAN without problems.

  • vmware's Bridge Network is configured to ath0.

  • I have stoped and started vmware and the problem continues.

My Configuration:

At /etcnetwork/interfaces:

-

  1. The loopback network interface

auto lo

iface lo inet loopback

  1. The primary network interface

auto eth0

iface eth0 inet static

address 192.168.2.250

netmask 255.255.255.0

network 192.168.2.0

broadcast 192.168.2.255

gateway 192.168.2.1

  1. dns-* options are implemented by the resolvconf package, if installed

dns-nameservers 192.168.2.1

dns-search intranet.local

But, as I am not using ethernet, I configure wifi later at /etc/rc.local:

-

  1. Ensure ethernet is down. We do not use it here.

ifconfig eth0 down

modprobe ath_pci

/usr/local/bin/wlanconfig ath0 destroy

/usr/local/bin/wlanconfig ath0 create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode sta

iwconfig ath0 essid "belkin01"

iwpriv ath0 authmode 1

iwconfig ath0 key za1855racb2e41c1cc195d584

ifconfig ath0 192.168.2.101 netmask 255.255.255.0 up

route add default gw 192.168.2.1

Result from ifconfig at host:

I'm trying to expand a SCSI VMDK on VMware Server 2 build 122956 running on Windows Server 2008 x64 that does not have any snapshots. When I shut down the VM, go to edit Hard Disk 1 (SCSI 0:0) and select Increase Capacity, add space and then hit OK I get the following error:

"Reconfigure Virtual Machine" failed to complete

Operation failed becuase file already exists

The guest is also Windows Server 2008 x64 and I have not been able to find any posts here or elsewhere indicating this error. Any help is much appreciated.

ssl enabled vsftpd server in virtual machine with NAT

Hello,

I set up a virtual machine (configured with NAT virtual networking) running vsftpd on Linux as a FTP server. This FTP server is SSL enabled with both control and data connections requiring SSL. Active FTP is disabled, only passive FTP is enabled.

I configured the file /etc/vmware/vmnet8/nat/nat.conf to have port 21/tcp on the host forwarded to port 21/tcp on the guest. I also defined forwardings for the passive ports.

From the host, I can successfully ftps the guest IP address on port 21/tcp. I use lftp as the FTP client and all works as expected.

Now, if I try to ftps the host IP address on port 21/tcp, then it does not work. Debugging FTP information on both client and server sides give the following.

On the client side:

$ lftp -p 21 -u bob XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX

Password:

lftp bob@XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:~> debug

lftp bob@XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:~> ls

It is like if the TLS negotiation could not be made... The FTP server never receives the command "OPTS UTF8 ON" sent by the FTP client.

I tried a lot of things but I am stuck with this. Does anybody know what may be happening here?

Thanks.

VMs power on stuck at 95%

Hello virtual people,

I have a serious issue with VMware Server 2 on Windows Vista x64.

When I try to power on a virtual machine, it stucks at 95% on the "Power On Virtual Machine" task.

It happens with all of my VMs, Windows and non-Windows.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling VMware Server but the issue won't solve

Do you have any clue on how to solve this ?

Here is attached a sample log...

Virtual Machine suspends randomly?

$

This one is driving me nuts, I have a virtual machine that randomly suspends itself. I checked the power options inside the VM, it's not set to any power plans (it should stay on).

I checked the logs on the host and there's no specific events that could've caused this, and the only thing I can see is within the vmx's log that the VMTools initiated the suspend call. I thought this was isolated to this particular VM, but the problem has spread to the other VMs right now, to a lesser frequency.

Environment:

Host: Windows 2008 Enterprise x64, VMWare Server 2, running 4 total Virtual Machine, Quad Core Xeon 2.8ghz, 16GB RAM

Guest: Windows 2003 Enterprise x86 SP2, using 2 proc threads, 2GB RAM, virtualized from physical machine by VMware vCenter.

This is actually pretty hilarious, but nevertheless it's really sad. On top of all issues with shutdown, startup, suspend and more, that both I (VM Suspend vs. shutdown and general problems...) , and many others have, I now upgraded my machine to dual core Opterons, and also added some more memory to see if that helped.

Nope, it didn't, and now the managment interface shows some completely absurd numbers..

And also, the VMs are running so slow it's absolutely horrible, time to go back to Server 1.x, it's just been too much now.

SCSI Passthrough Device gets I/O errors

$

Greetings!

I am replicating my production environment in a virtual server. The host is a Sun x2200, single quad-core CPU, 8GB RAM, and a QLogic 2460 FC adapter to my SAN. This is running the 64 bit version of Red Hat Linux 5.3

On this host I have created 6 guests. In order to more precisely re-create my production environment, I mapped the LUNs from the production boxes (after powering them off) and new, temporary LUNs to the host and used the linux command dd to replicate the data, networking, etc. I created virtual servers an used the LUNs as scsi passthrough devices to get to the data. In all I am running 16 LUNs in this way.

My guests are as follows:

Windows 2003 Server

NetWare 6.5.7 doing file and print services

NetWare 6.5.7 running GroupWise (this is being migrated to OES)

SuSE Enterprise 10 SP2 also running OES 2 (this is going to be the new GroupWise server)

NetWare 6.5.7

Windows XP Pro management workstation

In the test environment all systems' network cards are set to host-only so I can run it without impacting my production environment.

Everything works except for when I stress the data path on my email server. In order to migrate the data from the current mail server to the new one I have to copy all 30 GBbetween the machines. I have tried several methods to make it happen and all have failed.

1. I can mount the data volume from the NW server on the OES server and copy the data.

2. I can re-map the LUN to the OES server and copy it directly from folder to folder.

3. I can map drives on the management workstation to both servers and copy it that way.

Every time, about 3 GB into the copy I get a MASSIVE number of errors on the guest (be it the Netware or the OES guest) and the NSS volume dismounts. No errors show up at all on the host or on the SAN. Here are some of the errors I get on the guest:

Device not ready: <6>: Current: sense key: Not REady

end_request: I/O error, dev sdd, sector 98497911

NSSLOG ==> zlssLogicalVolume.c[4989]

Error reading PoolData Block 5241990, status=20206

Pool "MAIL" - MSAP deactivate.

I have tried re-creating the volume several times with no additional success.

My question is this: Is it possible that VMWare is having trouble with 16 passthrough devices? The LUN in question has been #13 and #16. Without a bunch of work I can't move it easily to #3.

Since the issue shows up on multiple guests with different OS's, with multiple LUNs, and only when large amounts of data are being transmitted, I have to think it is either a HBA driver issue (it is at the latest version) or a VMWare issue.

Anyone else ever done something like this? I need to finish this test so I can do the live migration on Saturday.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanx!

-Michael

I am unable to remove a datastore from VMWare Server 2. It keeps throwing back an error:

Is there a way to remove it manually? I'm new with VMWare Server. Any help would be appreciated.

Strange keyboard issue: AltGr

I'm running VMware server 2.0.1 on Slackware-12.2 (Linux 2.6.27.7).

The AltGr key won't work in any VM's console, which is strange, because it works in the window manager. It looks like AltGr is just not recognized by the console.

Running e.g. Win98 in a VM I can get around this by using the ancient key combination left ctrl + left alt, but that doesn't work in e.g. NetBSD-5.0 for me.

Does anyone have any ideas where to tweak some setting to get AltGr working?

Num Lock

I use AutoHotKey to map a script to the Num Lock key. The script closes calc if it's open and active, activates calc if it's in the background, and opens calc if it's not open. Since I've started using VMware, calc will be opened twice randomly. Obviously VMware is sending some sort of num lock signal. From what I've researched, it does this to synchronise the num lock status. Is there a way of disabling this num lock synchronising and just having num lock always set to on?

Permissions problem! I locked myself out of one of the images.

Greetings,

I did a bone-headed thing... I was expirementing with permissions and in one of my "test" images I added "Users role Read-Only on This object" but I didn't realize that as an "Administrator" I am also a user and that "deny" permissions supersede allow permissions. Now I have no way to go back and delete that permission on the users group! I'd happily just delete this VM from my inventory but it won't let me do that either.

How do I remove the permission or remove the VM from my inventory? This is very frustrating!

Thanks!

Missing "/etc/vmware/locations" file

Hello Everyone,

I'm running VMware Server 2.0.1 on an RHEL 5 host. I wanted to change the configuration of VMware Server by running vmware-config.pl. As a result, I powered off all of the VMs and stopped the VMware service. Not having run vmware-config.pl yet, I just restarted my machine. On reboot, I stopped the VMware service, but it said FAILED. Curious as to why, I tried starting it. It told me that '/etc/vmware/locations' is missing. I went to check it out, and sure enough, it is missing. I didn't delete it, it seems like it just disappeared.

Now here's my problem: Because this file is missing, I cannot run 'vmware-config.pl' because it says the file is missing. I can't uninstall VMware and reinstall it because it says '/etc/vmware/locations' is missing. I can't just install it because RPM says its already installed.

Any help would greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
