pptp timeout on vm windows server 2008 r2

$

Hello,

on VMware Server 2.0.2 for Windows i have the following setup:

Host: Windows Server 2008 R2

VM: Windows Server 2008 R2

The VM has a bridged network adapter with its own public IP-Address connected to the internet and a VPN incoming connection is ready on the VM.

And here comes the problem:

The host CAN connect to the VM via VPN PPTP, but from outside a client computer cannot - it fails with a timeout.

In detail:

A client (e.g. Win7) trying to connect via VPN (PPTP) hangs at "Verifying user name password..." and after two minutes, the connections gets closed error 619. On the Host this failed connection is logged as Event ID 20252 "The user connected to port VPN3-127 has been disconnected because the authentication process did not complete within the required amount of time."

Other VPN models, e.g. SSTP work without a problem.

I have tried any setting with total firewall off etc. so from now on I assume a problem with the vmware virtual network adapter. It seems to fail to read the GRE- or PPTP Protocol.

Assign valid IP addresses to virtual machines

$

Hello every one,

First of all I wanted to mention that I'm totally new to this virtualization thing and forgive me if this is a dumb question, but I'm really confused about that. So I have a dedicated server with 5 valid IP addresses that clearly one of them is used for the host (the mentioned dedicated server), now I have 2 virtual machines on this host and I need to assign each machine a valid IP address, Can you please tell me how can I do that?

Thanks in advance

Anyone succesfully configure VSphere 5.1 with emulex OneConnect 11100 10Gb ISCSI Hardware HBA

HI, im trying to set my some hp blade bl460c in a C7000  and i'm struggling with the iSCSI Hardware adapter.

I'm running VSphere ESXi 5.1 update 2 and have no trouble with FC adapter. Yet, the hardware iSCSI adapter won't show up on the host.

I tried different vib install to load the iSCSI driver from the vmware download section, but nothing worked so far. And the vib loaded made the host unreachale by the client... Received error 503, connection refused. Even by ssh... I stuggled as many command stated "Unable to connect to local host". I had to redo the blade profile and remove the iSCSI adapter to successfully log back on the blade and than run the command to remove the vib installed... ouch.

So... I was wondering if anyone successfully made it work! There an iSCSI accelerator in the c7000 and want to take advantage from it!

More than 4GB memory on 32bit Linux with VMWare Server 2?

$

Hi All,

Do you have any experience to use more than 4 GB memory by a 64 bit guest on a 32 bit host OS?

The host computer is Intel Core2 Duo T6600 CPU with 4 GB phy. RAM, but I want to upgrade to 8GB. The host OS is FC9 32 bit, 2.6.26 kernel, with PAE on.

I use several math applications and I am thinking on to upgrade to VMWare Server 2.0 if I can use that benefits. I do not have time to reinstall the host os and use 64 bit now...Unfortunately I have not found any info about this subject in the docs.

Any infos and suggestions are welcome!

Kind regards,

Paul

vmWare Host Agent (vmware-hostd.exe) service hangs at startup on Windows Server 2003

vmWare Host Agent (vmware-hostd.exe) service allways hangs at startup on Windows Server 2003

Machine is an IBM Blade Server Windows Enterprise Server 2003 32 bit

vmware Server 2 installation was successfull.

all other vmware services start and stop properly (DHCP, NAT, Authorization Service, Web Access.

Machine is:

Intel Xeon CPU E5430 @ 2.66, 8GB RAM 2 CPU's 4 Cores per CPU

Machine has a SAN (Qlogic Fibre Channel LSI Adapter 3000 series 4-port with 1064E -StorPort

Machine has 2 usb devices attached:

  TEAC FD-05PUB USB Device (FDD)

  HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8082N USB Device (DVD ROM)

Reading logs seems something related to SCSI Address... or maybe related do CDROM.

Allways hangs at same point.

Tested detaching usb devices and starting service, service hangs at the same point.

Any idea or advice apreciated. Thanks id advance.

Performance tuning in Server 2.0

Everyone has their favorite list of performance tweaks for the old 1.0 Server product.  MemTrimRate, pshare, etc.

Has anyone applied these tweaks to the 2.0 product?  Do they still help with performance?  Do they even still exist as tweaks?

I posted this question back in the RC2 forums and nobody ever responded.  Is nobody interested in improving VM performance under 2.0?

VMWare Server 2, guest sound playes on host

$

Hi All..

I have read endless posts on sound issues but I still cannot solve my problem.

I have a CentOS 5.2 Host (64bit) with a windows XP professional guest (32bit).

On my host I have:

lspci | grep -i audio

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation ICH10 HD Audio Controller

For the guest I tried auto detect and /dev/dsp for the sound adapter. My XP guest looks like it has the PCI sound device properly installed and everything looks fine. I can do the volume control and everything.

The funny thing is, when I play some audio in the XP guest then I hear the sound on the host linux server.

What am I missing?

Starting a VM

$

This is probably a very simple question and I

think I'm just overlooking something, but where the hell is the

interface for the VM?

I was able to install the software following the method I found here:  http://www.howtoforge.com/the-perfect-desktop-mandriva-one-2009.0-gnome-p6

But for some reason, I just can't find the interface of my VM. I've

set up the VM correctly and everything. When I start/power-on the VM, I

can hear my Host CPU working and the CD spinning (installing XP onto

VM) but I don't get a window pop-up or whatever is supposed to happen

for the interface with the Guest OS.

What am I missing??

VMWare Server 2.0 Backup Problem

$

0

Lately I've migrated two running (w2003) servers to VMWare Server 2.

Om the host machine (w2003) I am using NTBackup to backup the virtual machine as VMWare server supports VSS backups.

However on both machines I receive the following error on every backup:

"VMware VSS Writer" has reported an error 0x800423f3. The Volume Shadow Copy operation can be retried.

I followed the VMWare documentation on using NTBackup with Vmware Server 2 and started the VMWare VSS Writer inside the guest. I configured the config file for overwriting the generated snapshot.

Furthermore I tried to enable Shadow Copying on all drives on the Host and the Guest hoping it would work, defragmented all drives, but still no luck.

I can't believe that I am the only one having this problem on the first two servers I migrate.

Problems with WMWare Server 2.0 and the VMware® Remote Console - blank screen

I have installed VMWare Server 2.0.  I have a problem when I am connecting to the VMware® Remote Console.  The window is appearing blank.

http://communities.vmware.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/4505/VMWARE00.jpg

I have one VM Machine with Red Hat 4 AS working well in another workstation and it works perfectly.  When i copied to the new VMWare server I was unable to access the Virtual Machine.  I decided to recreate this machine from scratch and the same problem was coming with my new machine.  From this machine I am able to access another VMWare Server  and connect to some VMachines that I have in there.

I would love to be able to open the VMWare Remote Console and to work with my virtual machines.  Any advise?  IS something that I can do to fix this situation?

Set custom SSL certificate for Server 2.0.0.

$

Hi,

I would like to set custom SSL certificate for Server 2.0.0. I already have generated new .cer and .key files via my Certificate Authority.

I have replaced

/etc/vmware/ssl/rui.crt

/etc/vmware/ssl/rui.key

with the new files and restarted the VMware Server.

Server loads up OK, but the web interface does not. The log in /var/log/vmware/hostd.log shows:

error: Crypto Exception: error:0906A068:PEM routines:PEM_do_header:bad password read

Looks like something with the certificate password. Where do I put the password that I set for the certificate when I generated it via my Certificate Authority?

Are there any special requirements to use custom SSL certificates. 1024 or 2048 bits?

Any help would be appreciated.

Kind regards, Marko.

The reason for this - I would like to set up a new HostOnly network adapter on the system. I cannot see a way to do this via the VI Web Access console.

I'm more than happy to be told to RTFM, if the appropriate section of the FM is highlighted

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Guest won't connect to different WiFi networks

I am running Windows Vista Enterprise x64 as my host.  I have an XP .x32 guest running on it that i use to VPN into my work from home.  The issue is that on those days when i have to go into the office that same XP guest won't connect to the wireless network at work.  My Vista host connects fine in either location but the guest will only connect if I am at home.  I checked out my virtual network settings and it is set to automatically detect network.  I changed it once and selected that vmnet0 always use my wireless NIC but that did help either.  I created the guest while i was at home but i would think as long as my host is connected to a particular network the guest wouldn't mind which one.

Has anyone seen this issue before.

Thanks...

Ubuntu 9.04 x64 vmnet0/bridge issues with VMWare Server 2.0

I'm running VMWare Server 2.0.1 on an Optiplex 755 running Ubuntu 9.04 x64.  Everything installed OK, and I was able to get a few VM's running and bridged to my internal network via vmnet0 without any issue.  The problem occurs when I reboot the host, somehow it loses connection to the bridge.  All of the guest OS's cannot obtain ip addresses from my dhcp server, when they could before I rebooted.  To fix this, I have to re-run /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl, and it is ok until the hosts reboots again, I don't even have to reconfigure the network settings at all.

I did read a couple of other posts saying to check for a process that says '/usr/bin/vmnet-bridge -d /var/run/vmnet-bridge-0.pid -n 0 -i eth0', and that is there, both before and after reboots.

I can set it up as NAT and everything works fine both before and after reboots.

Is there something I'm missing here?  Anyone have any ideas?  Thank you for any help.

Guest Loopback Versus Guest-Guest Network Performance

$

My question comes from the world of academia, I am part of a gradutate student project at UCSD conducting networking benchmarks in virtualized environments.

Our experiments yielded interesting results for the following configuration for guest OS TCP loopback and guest to guest communication throughput measurements:

Intel Quad Core Xeon Machine 2.66Ghz, 32GB Ram, Ubuntu 8.04 running Vmware server 2 with two identical guest operating systems assigned 2GB RAM each. VMware tools are installed. TCP benchmarks was performed with netperf and lmbench utilities.

What we observed is that the host operating system running on bare metal achieved 10Gb/s loopback throughput, while the guest achieved 15Gb/s. Guest to guest communication on the same machine saw order of magnitude lower throughput of 1.2Gb/s. It was quite surprising to see the guest outperforming the host, and also to see the impressive throughput disappear for guest-guest communication.

We are in the process of ruling out design flaws in our experiment, but at the same time we would like to know if anyone else has made such observations, or if there are any plausible explanation of our results. We have gone over the VMware networking whitepapers and the discussions on virtual switches but would like to hear from the community.

Any help / insight / links would be greatly appreciated!

The network bridge on device vmnet0 is temporarily down. Why do I need to restart vmware services to fix this?

G'day,

I'm running VMServer 2.0.1 on Ubuntu 9.0.4 (Jaunty) hosting CentOS 4.7 guest VMs.

I am continually seeing the following message when powering on a guest VM:

The network bridge on device vmnet0 is temporarily down because the bridged Ethernet interface is down. The virtual machine may not be able to communicate with the host or with other machines on your network.

The work-around I've discovered is to restart the vmware services, i.e.

$ sudo /etc/init.d/vmware stop

Stopping VMware autostart virtual machines:

  Virtual machines                                                    done

Stopping VMware management services:

VMware Virtual Infrastructure Web Access

  VMware Server Host Agent                                            done

Stopping VMware services:

  VMware Authentication Daemon                                        done

  Virtual machine communication interface                             done

  Virtual machine monitor                                             done

  Bridged networking on /dev/vmnet0                                   done

  Host network detection                                              done

  DHCP server on /dev/vmnet1                                          done

  Host-only networking on /dev/vmnet1                                 done

  NAT service on /dev/vmnet8                                          done

  Host-only networking on /dev/vmnet8                                 done

  Virtual ethernet                                                    done

$ sudo /etc/init.d/vmware start

Starting VMware services:

  Virtual machine monitor                                             done

  Virtual machine communication interface                             done

  Virtual ethernet                                                    done

  Bridged networking on /dev/vmnet0                                   done

Host-only networking on /dev/vmnet1 (background)                    done

  DHCP server on /dev/vmnet1                                          done

Host-only networking on /dev/vmnet8 (background)                    done

  NAT service on /dev/vmnet8                                          done

VMware Server Authentication Daemon (background)                    done

  Shared Memory Available                                             done

Starting VMware management services:

VMware Server Host Agent (background)                               done

  VMware Virtual Infrastructure Web Access

Starting VMware autostart virtual machines:

Output from ifconfig and ps -ef |grep vmnet is given below.

Why isn't vmnet0 available after booting, and how can I make it so?

Thanks,

Chris.

I have instaled Vmware server 2.01 in Ubuntu 9.04 - Jaunty Jackalope, but  the virtual machines have problems to connect : "The network bridge on device vmnet0 is temporarily down because the

bridged Ethernet interface is down. The virtual machine may not be able

to communicate with the host or with other machines on your network".

When I try to config again the vmware with "sudo /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl", appears the next:

The following VMware kernel modules have been found on your system that were

not installed by the VMware Installer.

Please remove them then run this installer again.

vmci

vmnet

vmmon

I.e. - 'rm /lib/modules/2.6.28-15-generic/misc/<ModuleName>.{o,ko}'

Execution aborted.

Thanks.
