VCenter Server Service crashing

$

I'm new to supporting VCenter and on our VCenter Server, the VCenter Server Service keeps crashing at startup.  I've attached our log file and I hope someone can help me out. Researching the various errors in the logs hasn't helped me yet.

Thanks in advance.

ssh - server unexpectedly closed network connection

Hi,

I'm unable to connect via SSH to one of my hosts using putty. The others are fine. Tried from different clients, same result.

I can putty into my vMA 4 server and ssh root@hostname to get a connection no problem but not directly from putty

This tells me that SSH service is fine.

Checked the sshd_config settings

Hi!,

I'm having a problem with one of my virtual machines on VMWARE Server 2.

Suddenly, after a server crash, the machine didn't boot up correctly. Apparently something went wrong with the hard disk. I tried to remove and add again the hard disk, however, when I tried to add it it says:

"The selected file is not a valid virtual disk file. Please choose a different name"

Attached there are vmx, vmxf and vmdk files.

Any hint about this?

vmWare Host Agent (vmware-hostd.exe) service hangs at startup on Windows Server 2003

vmWare Host Agent (vmware-hostd.exe) service allways hangs at startup on Windows Server 2003

Machine is an IBM Blade Server Windows Enterprise Server 2003 32 bit

vmware Server 2 installation was successfull.

all other vmware services start and stop properly (DHCP, NAT, Authorization Service, Web Access.

Machine is:

Intel Xeon CPU E5430 @ 2.66, 8GB RAM 2 CPU's 4 Cores per CPU

Machine has a SAN (Qlogic Fibre Channel LSI Adapter 3000 series 4-port with 1064E -StorPort

Machine has 2 usb devices attached:

  TEAC FD-05PUB USB Device (FDD)

  HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8082N USB Device (DVD ROM)

Reading logs seems something related to SCSI Address... or maybe related do CDROM.

Allways hangs at same point.

Tested detaching usb devices and starting service, service hangs at the same point.

Any idea or advice apreciated. Thanks id advance.

Vmware server 2 - Problem with snapshots

$

Hi,

I have a problem regarding snapshots in a virtual machine.

My server has the bellow  identity:

VMware Infrastructure Web AccessVersion 2.0.0Build 128374

VMware ServerVersion 2.0.1Build 156745

The virtual machine has two disks, one 140GB and one 65GB. My problem resides to the first one that included OS files too.

When I opened the folder of that disk, I found all these:

VMsnapshot.png

From a little search I did I found that there are some snapshots in that VM but here:

FromWithinVMserver.png

looks like there is no snapshot...

I tried stopping the machine and by using vmware-vdiskmanager.exe tool to merge all disk files to one (since no snapshots seems to exist) but the result when I used the new file, was a disk more that a year old.

Is there any way to merge all the old snapshots in order to create one disk file in the end?

Here are some more info:

Constant NullPointerException: Operation failed. errors in web UI

I just did a fresh install of VMware 2.0 on a single core Athlon server using Fedora Core 9.  I have another FC9 server running vmware more stable then this though it still flakes out at times.

This new install howeever spurts out the NullPointerException: Operation failed. error pretty much all the time.

Also it hangs at "loading"  and I have to hit refresh.  Has anyone encountered this before?

Windows 2003 guest install painfully slow

Hi all,

I am running VMware server 2.0 on a 3Ghz dual-core 64bit processor with 8gb of memory and 1tb of hard drive. I am trying to install Windows Server 2003 enterprise as a guest. I have tried both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Neither of them will install. The installation moves along painfully slow, and it just randomly freezes at some point. This happens every time. What should I do??

Thanks!

Driver_IRQL_Not_Less_Or_Equal - Minidump attached

$

I have a Windows Server 2008 64bit Datacenter edition server running in a VMWare Server 2 environment with a RHEL 5 host. I have just set this machine up, and I'm getting a blue screen, seemingly at random. The message is "Driver_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL." I had this same issue with a Server 2003 VMWare guest on the same physical host machine.

I'm also seeing the following:

Activation [N5Vmomi10Activatio

nE:0x1333b060] : Invoke done on

Throw vmodl.fault.SystemError

Result:

(vmodl.fault.SystemError) {

dynamicType = ,

reason = "Unknown error",

msg = ""

}

The server is an Active Directory Domain Controller. It also hosts the DNS and IIS roles, and is protected by Symantec Endpoint Protection. Attached are some of the minidump files from the Server 2003 installation. What other information, logs, etc can I provide to help with the diagnosis? It is somewhat important that I get this working properly, so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Martin Schultz

Hi,

I have a problem with VMware server 2.0 running on Windows 2003: Guests do not start when VMware server starts. Instead vmauthd error is logged in event log and hostd.log.

I already checked the permissions on relevant VMware directories and re-install VMware server, but the problem persists.

Symantec Endpoint Protection is running on the same machine.

Thanks for any help!

Still Having Problems Installing 64 Bit Guest.

Ok, let's start over.

I have a 64 bit Gateway, 6 megs of ram. It's an FX4710 - UB003A model,

running Vista Premium Home 64 bit.

I installed VMware Server 2. I can access the web access just fine.

I have ran the VMware-guest64check-6.0.0-45731 and the check passed.

I'm trynig to install Ubuntu 8.04 64bit. but I keep getting an error saying "This Kernel

Requires  an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU.

Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your cpu."

Ideas?

Hi there,

Anybody knows what this error message means:

"msg.vmxaiomgr.retrycontabort.rudeunplug:Operation

on file "
.\PhysicalDrive1" failed.

If the file resides on a remote file system, please make sure your

network connection and the server where this disk resides are

functioning properly. If the file resides on removable media, reattach

the media.

Choose Retry to attempt the operation again.

Choose Abort to terminate this session.

Choose Continue to forward the error to the guest operating system."

I guess it wants to say that there are problems with the disk attached to the guest. It happened before, I checked the disk for errors but none were found.I restarted the guest and after a couple of tries it was back on. Now it happened again.

VMWare Tools install hangs

$

Hello all -

Bit of a VM newbie here, so please have mercy  :).

Running VMW Server 2.0 on Vista SP1 32-bit - no problems. Guest OS is fully patched W2k Pro, also running without problems (this is really slick, too - it was virtualized from its old hardware to run on this machine in a VM, and it's running faster in the VM than it did on the hardware!)

Anyway, the problem is that VMWare Tools hangs during the install in the Guest W2k Pro machine. Eventually, I ended it (after almost 60 hours running). Mouse integration works fine, but drag-n-drop and cut-n-paste do not. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

How to add vmnet10, 11, 12, 13...

$

Dear All,

I would like to configure a number of custom networks within VMware Server 2.0 and have noted that the VMware Server 2.0 User Guide states that up to 255 virtual switches can be added under Linux (p213). I take this to mean that I can have the standard vmnet0 to vmnet9 and vmnet10, 11, 12, 13, 14 etc.

Firstly is this correct?

Secondly how can I create the additional virtual switches?

Thanks in advance.

Vmrun shutdown of virtual guest not working for me in Server 2

I am trying to use the vmrun command line utility to force the shutdown of a running virtual machine under Vmware Server 2.

The host system is Suse 10 and the guest is Wndows Server 2000. I am using the datastore syntax for the command. I have checked the command a dozen times and am sure I have made no error in syntax.

The guest machine is hardware version 4 and I have the latest vmware tools for server 2 installed in the guest.

When I run the command it begins by initiating guest shutdown, but then does nothing afterwards. When I open a console window to the guest it is sitting there as if its just logged off. Memory for the guest is 512mg.

any thoughts out there?

I am struggling here and really need help.I have Ubuntu 8.10 desktop installed and successfully installed VMware server 2.0. I built a Ubuntu guest VM and want to use my USB webcam in the VM but no matter what I try it doesn't work. Can someone tell me the specific steps in the host and in the guest to get a USB webcam working in a Ubuntu VM? It's a logitech 4000 webcam.

I've tried so many suggestions on these forums and the ubuntu forums to try and get it working and nothing has helped.

Thanks!

A few days ago I ran into the following problem:

when try to logon to my vmware-server at https://myhost.com:8333 I only get a blank page but not the usual and expected login-window

I tried with firefox3 and recent opera under linux and IE7 under windows. This is not a certificate-problem, cause all certificates are installed and this never was a problem before. I tried to restart vmware-mgmt but it didnt help. I even rebooted the whole host-machine (a linux-server) but no effect.

I can connect to the vmware-server using the vmware virtual infrastructure client and all VM's are running fine. Its just that I cant use the webinterface, which I really like to use, cause its the easiest way to manage our VM's on the run.

any suggestions?

I'm in a little bit of a jam... without going into details I will explain this as simple as I can.

I have a loop image (ext3) that resides on a windows share. I need to convert this to a vmdk, or setup the loop and dd to an image vmware can use.

VMware tools cause net to cut out at boot

$

Hello folks,

Might I say, I love VMware server 2.0, because vmware tools that fit into CentOS 5 make my day.  On the other hand, the tools don't seem to work as well with CentOS 4 anymore...

Here's my predicament: I have a CentOS 5 host with several virtual machines running slimmed down versions of CentOS 4.  Tools install just fine on my CentOS 5 guests, but when I install and configure tools on the CentOS 4 guests, it gives me a message about having to run the following:

/etc/init.d/networking stop

rmmod vmxnet

rmmod pcnet32

modprobe vmxnet

/etc/init.d/networking start

Which works.  The networking works after I do this, and stays up.  But, as soon as I reboot, there's NO net until I run those steps again.  One of the reasons I enjoy VMware server 2.0 is the slick options I have for starting my VMs in order, and this defeats the purpose.  Any tips?

run vmware-vmx processes as non-root

$
0
0

I'm sure this question has been asked, but I have no idea of how to phrase my search.

My issue is this - we have a NAS that's squashing root, the virtual machines reside on an NFS export on said NAS, and the vmware-vmx processes are owned by root.  Even if I choose a non-root user during the vmware-config.pl script, it still runs the processes as root.  When it comes time to spin up the VM, it barks that it doesn't have sufficient privs to the disk (regardless of how I chmod it).  The easy way out is to disable root_squash, but that's not an option.  Is there a place to modify who owns the vmware processes during VM execution?

Thanks in advance.
