Cannot connect to any USB device on my virtual machines

Hallo,

need HELP.

i had 3 virtual machines (1xW2k3 DC and 2xW2k3 as an virtual Cluster) with Virtual Server 1.05 on my Laptop (XP SP2) created.

USB functions great.

Then our IT installs Vista SP1 on my Laptop. OK....no problem i thought...what a great optimism.

On the new installed Laptop i install the new Vmware Server 1.07 and import the old with Virtual Server 1.05 created virtual machines.

But after connecting an USB-Drive i wasn´t able to connect the device in the virtual machine...it was greyed out.

After severel trys to reanimate it i decide to install VMware Server 2.0. But the same Problem. In the Remote Console i can see what type of USB-Drive is connected like "Sandisk USB-Massstorage", but the connect Button is greyed out.

The problem i see is, that on the hostsystem the "VMmware USB-Device"-Driver is not installed and the guest-Systems think that he is installed.

All attempts were in vain to install this driver manually on the Laptop (host-system).

Can anyone help me?

Thanks Juergen

Hi guys,

I have virtualised my Vista x64 Ultimate on my Windows Server 2008 machine. Everything works okay expect one thing - my USB stick PINNACLE PCTV PRO. I tried everything to make it work but was not successful.

Anyone has a solution for me? Drivers are installed properly, I can see pctv 330e in VMware icon bar but option Connect is disabled. I am running latest version of VMware Server 2.

Thanks for your ideas!

Can't shutdown Virtual Machine via VMrun

I have a Windows Server 2003 as host, with VMware Server 2.0 (build 122956), with a Windows XP (SP3) installed as a virtual machine. I'm trying to shut down the image from the host, but I'm having no luck..

The list command works fine:

D:\VirtualMachines>"c:\program files\VMware\VMwareServer\vmrun.exe" -T server -h https://mymachine.domain.com:8333/sdk -u <MyUsername> -p <MyPassword> list

Total running VMs: 1

FTP_main/Windows XP Professional.vmx

But when I try to shut down that machine:

D:\VirtualMachines>"c:\program files\VMware\VMwareServer\vmrun.exe" -T server -h https://mymachine.domain.com:8333/sdk -u <MyUsername> -p <MyPassword> stop "[dstore] FTP_main/Windows XP Professional.vmx" soft

Error: The virtual machine is not powered on: FTP_main/Windows XP Professional.vmx

It

is powered on, and I don't have a clue as to what is wrong here..

Anybody have any tips here?

Getting msg.uuid.altered every time vmware server restarts

$

Each time my Windows Server 2008 R2 host restarts, the guest operating system clients running on vmware server fail to start.  They get the following error message:

msg.uuid.altered:This virtual machine may have been moved or copied.

In order to configure certain management and networking features VMware Server needs to know which.

Did you move this virtual machine, or did you copy it?

If you don't know, answer "I copied it".

I did not move or copy any of the clients.  The first time this happened, I was surprised, and I checked moved.  This allowed the machine to start, but the next time there was a reboot of the host, the error came back.  I tried copy, same behavior.

I am running the latest release of vmware server.

Any clue why this error message keeps coming back?

Dedicated NIC for VM

Hey guys,

I have a Server 2003 VM running on VMWare Server on a Server 2008 machine.  I would like to assign a dedicated NIC to it so that it can be assigned an IP by my router and I can RDP into it.  I know that this is possible, but I don't know how.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Matt

Problem with creating Virtual Machine, datastore and adding an existing Virtual Machine to inventory

$

OK, sorry if someone else has already posted this somewhere or the sollution has been posted but I am currently unable to find any such post after a whole day of searching.

Anyway, I recently upgraded my VMWare Server installation to version 2 (running on Windows Server 2003 Standard R2). Since then, I have been unable to create a new Virtual Machine, create a new data store or even import an existing Virtual Machine.

All of these tasks result in the same error:

"PermissionDeniedException: Access Denied"

Upon looking at the tomcat log files in C:\Documents And Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMWare\VMWare Server\tomcat-logs I found in proxy.log the following:

Error in the method call CreateVM_Task : Permission to perform this operation was denied.

Error processing action request /cmd/folder : Permission to perform this operation was denied.

Error in the method call CreateLocalDatastore : Permission to perform this operation was denied.

Error processing action request /cmd/hostdatastoresystem : Permission to perform this operation was denied.

Error in the method call RegisterVM_Task : Permission to perform this operation was denied.

Error processing action request /cmd/folder : Permission to perform this operation was denied.

If anyone knows of a solution any help would be much appreciated.

Hi

I created an XP vm on a Vista 64 host and when I try to launch it status hangs at 95%... (the OS has not yet been installed that`s what I'm trying to do)

Does anyone knows what the problem might be ? Is there a log or something similar that I could look at to give me an idea of what the problem is ?

Thanks

Performance tuning in Server 2.0

Everyone has their favorite list of performance tweaks for the old 1.0 Server product.  MemTrimRate, pshare, etc.

Has anyone applied these tweaks to the 2.0 product?  Do they still help with performance?  Do they even still exist as tweaks?

I posted this question back in the RC2 forums and nobody ever responded.  Is nobody interested in improving VM performance under 2.0?

Can't login to Web Access after new install

$

I have done an RPM install of Server 2.0 on a fresh install of CentOS 5.2.

After the initial config, when I attempt to connect to http://127.0.0.1:8222, I get the Web Access login. When I login I get an error:

The VMware Infrastructure Web Service at "http://localhost:8222/sdk" is not responding (Connection Refused)

The troubleshooting I've done so far is:

vmware-auth is listening on port 902, webAccess is listening on port 8308, vmware-hostd is listening on ports 8222 and 8333.

The hostd  log contains no errors and ends with:

--2008-10-02 11:23:34.032 'App' 3086161600 info-- BEGIN SERVICES

The webAccess proxy.log contains only this error:

[2008-10-02 10:45:40,123,http-8308-1<=>,RequestProcessor] Error processing action request /action/login : [ConnectException] Connection refused

Does anyone have a suggestion for my next step?

What is the proper syntax for runProgramInGuest?

$

Hi,

if I run:  vmrun -T server -h https://intel-ht-005/sdk -u root -p passwd listRegisteredVM, I get this result:

Total registered VMs: 4

test/Clone of SLES10sp1-64bit.vmx

1/Clone of SLES10sp1-64bit.vmx

2/Clone of SLES10sp1-64bit.vmx

3/Clone of SLES10sp1-64bit.vmx

For God's sakes, what's with this editor Standard in the above output is enclosed in brackets.

Then I  run this command: vmrun -T server -h https://intel-ht-005/sdk -u root -p passwd -gu root -gp passwd runProgramInGuest "[standard] test/Clone of SLES10sp1-64bit.vmx" ifconfig

I get: Error: A file was not found

Not sure if my syntax is wrong or what this error is trying to tell me, no matter what command I try (ifconfig, ls, echo) whatever, I get this error.

Thanks in advance

I'm trying to expand a SCSI VMDK on VMware Server 2 build 122956 running on Windows Server 2008 x64 that does not have any snapshots. When I shut down the VM, go to edit Hard Disk 1 (SCSI 0:0) and select Increase Capacity, add space and then hit OK I get the following error:

"Reconfigure Virtual Machine" failed to complete

Operation failed becuase file already exists

The guest is also Windows Server 2008 x64 and I have not been able to find any posts here or elsewhere indicating this error. Any help is much appreciated.

New install Cannot access data stores

I am trying to create a new virtual machine on my Vmware 2 server that I just installed on Cent OS 5.1 and I cannot seem to access the datastores.

I have tried every angle but I get the same result.

Error

Exception of type Vmomi.Fault.InvalidArgument was thrown.

I did disable selinux, iptables, and did a yum update of gcc, make before installation. The installation went fine so far as I can tell and I was able to access it no problem with the Windows Virtual infrastructure Client version 2.0.2 just like I had on my ESX server.

Any help would be appreciated!!

2nd bridged network not working

$

I setup a new nic (USB) on my main linux server, I was having DHCP issues (wont get an IP) but if I set it static it works.  But I only want to use it for bridged VMs so I did not set an IP.  But I just wanted to confirm the nic works, and it does.

So I went through the vmware-config   (is there an easier way to do this?  This is a very long and tedious process) to setup a new bridged VMnet.  I have 25 VM nets bridged to none so I just made one bridged to that nic.

For whatever reason, the VMs can't go out at all.   They wont talk outside of that nic.  I can't get an IP from the router.  (I confirmed the router works, by plugging another PC into it).

Any logs I could check or other troubleshooting I can do from this point?

edit: just found these:

eth1 is the one it should bridge to.  Why is it erroring out about getting an IP?  Does the nic need an IP to be bridged?  I really can't see why... For my setup it can't have an IP.  I don't want it to be accessible through tcp/ip for security reasons.  I want the vms to be accessible but not the vm server.

Cancel, replace, append serial port file?

$

I have a serial port on my CentOS5.2 VM. It uses a file (instead of a named pipe or a physical device). I use it to get the console output.

Problem is, every time the VM starts, I get the following query:

msg.serial.file.open:Serial port output file "/space/vm/CentOS5/console" already exists.
Do you want to replace it with any newly created content, or append new content to the end of the file?

Is there a way to make 'append' the automatic choice?

Shutting Down Guests Automatically

$

I'm running VMware Server 2.0 on Centos 5.2 and I'm trying to get guests to start up and shut down automatically on starting and shutting down the VMware service. I have the VMs that I want started up in 'Edit Virtual Machine Startup/Shutdown Settings', the guests start up OK but on a shutdown of the VMware server no attempt is made to shut down the guests at all and I get 'At least one instance of VMware Server is still running'. The guests all have VMware tools installed and running fine and shut down OK when issued with a manual shutdown of the guest.

From my perspective this looks as if this has never worked.

Securing VMware Server 2 on Linux

Hey Folks,

I just installed VMware Server 2 on a Linux host and I notice that it has opened up and is listening on a bunch of ports.  Is there somewhere where I can tell VMware to only bind to localhost or can centrally control it with tcpwrapper style access controls?  I'm not thrilled about having a bunch of ports open and I'd rather not screw with iptables.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Map or assign USB devices to virtual machines

$

Hi,

I searched this for a while and didn't find any proper solution. Here is my case :

I have three virtual machines, one under Linux, and two under WinXP. I also haveat least three USB devices connected to the host (running Windows 2008) : two printers and one Bluetooth dongle. I would like :

- that the two printers, when powered on, automatically plugs into the Linux VM

- the bluetooth dongle automatically goes to one of the WinXP VM

- anything else (like USB storage sticks) in the other WinXP.

I can't find any proper operation to do that, do you have some sort of idea ? Or do you know any other product that could do the trick ? (anything but hardware solutions, such as USB over Ethernet).

Thanks in advance

VM will not start the bios (=black screen)

$

Hello all,

i don't know how to solve my problem. I hope you can help me.

My system: Core2Duo/4GB/2,66 GHz,

Host system: a brand-new installed Windows Vista Home Premium with all updates.

After a fresh installation of VMServer-2.0.1-Build15745 i've created a new VM with the wizard with no particularities.

This VM will not start after power on. This means, the "virtual PC" does't run, there is no bios, only a black screen.

I think there is a bios after starting the VM, isn't it? But i've never seen it!

I've tested it with some VMs (XP, Ubuntu) with different media (hardware-DVD-drive, ISO-image) - all the same, whereas it's independent of the guest system, i think - because of the not-starting "PC".

Now i'm stumped, perhaps anyone has an idea for my problem?

Thank you

Guenther
