Vmware Host Freezes for Minutes when USB External Drive is Attached

Upon plugging in a USB external hard drive to a Vmware host running Server 2.0 the host will hang for approximately 2-3 minutes. Performance manager within Windows (this occurs on both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2003 hosts) shows massively high disk usage for this period of time. When it has finished hanging, everything returns to normal and the external drive is usable as normal.

This happens regardless of if there are any virtual machines on the computer, running or not.

If there is a virtual machine running on the computer then anybody connected to it gets kicked out as the delay and high disk activity just hangs it for everyone - example, outlook will disconnect if the vm is running exchange server and any network files will be inaccessible.

There are multiple external drives I have tried with this and they all do the same. They are formatted in NTFS for normal usage within Windows.

Has anybody else experienced this or found a solution? This is most strange.

Thanks.
