Guest Screen Resolution issues

I've been using earlier versions of Server for a while now, but for some reason I installed Server 2 on my wife's new laptop.  I won't comment too much about it being completely different from the older versions until I get more used to it.

Anyways... here's the deal:  The host laptop is running Vista 64-bit and my wife's VPN software is incompatible.  I installed server and created an XP VM and installed VMTools.  After researching ways to create an icon to make running the VM easier on my wife, everything works great, except for the VMs resolution.  The host has a NVidia 9600M GT and its resolution is 1920 x 1080 and I want the guest to run 1280 x 1024 as a full screen.  I don't mind the black bars on both sides.

When I startup the VM, it starts up at 1280 x 1024, but after about 30 seconds the resolution reverts back to 1920 x 1080 even though I have set the svga.maxHeight and svga.maxWidth settings in the vmx file.  I have tried the other various pref.autoFit settings, but nothing seems to work correctly.  I noticed that the listed video modes in the guest show all kinds of resolutions up to 2320 x 1660, so I don't know if that means anything.

Please, any help would be appreciated.
