Parallel port inconsistent behavior

Hi all,

I have moved/created new virtual machines in CentOS 5.2 64bit to run XP, W2k3, Vista and W2k8 guests for testing. I am happy performance-wise. But as part of testing, I need to have access to either parallel port or USB for an Alladin dongles. This a requirement to get the software running.

Anyway, I have couple of issues.

a) For the USB connection. Once I reboot I am losing my USB dongles. I need to reconnect using the web UI.

b) For the parallel port, I need to disconnect then reconnect before it gets seen by the guest OS.

Can anyone help me fix this?

Notes: For parallel port, I have disabled "lp" module in /etc/modprobe.conf

alias lp off

alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc

The logs (vmware*.log) does not tell me much about the parallel port. No access denied or something. I think vmware got a handle to the device actually, because cat /proc/sys/dev/parport/parport0 shows none when no vm are running. And it goes to ppdev when a vm is running with parallel added in the vmx.

Note: I am not very sure about the exact cat command and the output. I will check tomorrow once I am back in the office.

I am even willing to be a guinea pig to get this dongles working.

Regards,
