I want to install the NEXUS 1000V on a standalone ESXi host.
Questions:
1. The server is 1/2 the way around the world from the owning vCenter. I'm planning on installing new VSM on that serer and then the distributed switch. Is this a better approach than using the existing VSM in the North Eastern US with the distributed switch in Asia?
2. If I install the VSM on the server in Asia, I only care about the user data traffic being on the distributed switch. The only reason for the Nexus 1000V switch is for controlling the Multicast that will be generated from the traffic generators running as VMs on the ESXi host. This is a test bed and all the user traffic will remain in the dSwitch (ignoring when it heads to a Disk array over the FC). I assume I still need to make the Conntrol, Management, and Packet VLAN, plus a VLAN for the user data. What I do not want to do is have the chance of loosing access to the physical ESXi. Do I just NOT migrate the existing Management Network (VMkernel) from the vSwtich to the dSwtich but install everything else normally?
(YES I'm a Nexus 1000v newb...)
