Host: CentOS 5.4 - 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5 64-bit, 16 GB RAM, Dell Poweredge R610, VMWare server 2.0.1 build 156745, Web Infrastructure Web Access 2.0.0 build 128374
Guest: Windows 2003 Server Std. fully patched, HW v.7, VMWare Tools installed, 2CPU, 1 GB RAM, 50 GB HDD (SCSI 0:0 (Type 0)), Bridged VMNet, CD/ DVD (IDE 1:0) using /dev/scd0, LSI Logic SCSI Controller
Issue: Cannot "edit" virtual CD/ DVD ROM settings on guest. Every time I click and choose edit to change from the host's physical drive to an ISO or change the connect stateI get a pop-up window after about 30 seconds or so stating TITLE BAR: "CD/ DVD Drive 1 (IDE 1:0) Not Found, Content "The requested device could not be found. Either the device no longer exists on the virtual machine, or the device is currently being updated and is unavailble to the client". See attached image.
Notes:
The Guest sees the drive (both in device manager and My Computer) Double clicking the drive with nothing in it produces the standard windows response "Please insert disk into drive D:"
If I put a disk in the host CD/ DVD drive the guest can access it just fine.
If I remove the drive and add it back pointing to an ISO the guest can access the ISO just fine.
For all intents and purposes the guest has no issues with the drive at all. I only have issues trying to edit the settings of the virtual device itself.
There are no other win2k3 guests on this host only CentOS, I have verified I can set their CD/ DVD properties without issue.
Changing the drive to client media via the remote console window seems to work - however I cannot change it back to host using the web interface.
Steps I've taken:
Shut down the guest, removed the drive, immediately re-added the drive. Problem persists
Shut down the guest removed the drive, started the guest, verified the guest had no drive, shut down the guest re-added drive. Problem persists
Uninstalled vmware tools, repeated the previous two points, problem persists before and after the re-installation of vmware tools.
Verified the VMX config file with another VM that works - in fact the other VM is the same machine - both servers came from the same library image, which in fact is every other win2k3 server I currently have virtualized - this is the only guest exhibiting this issue.
Created the CD/ DVD drive as IDE 0:0, SCSI 0:1. Problem persists
Added a second CD/ DVD drive - both drives appear in the guest and are useable, however both drives behave the same way unable to be edited via the web interface.
Rebooted the host and re-run vmware-config.pl
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
