Windows Server 2008 x64 host, VMware Passthrough SCSI Device list doesn't contain physical (raw) hard disks ...

I'm tired and sleepy, I've been at this for over a week.  I'm hopeful that one of the resident gurus will be able to point me in the right direction, or better, help me solve this problem:

I'm running on a Dell Optiplex 745 workstation.  There are two SATA hard disks connected as Disk 0 and Disk 1. and a cdrom drive connected via USB as CD-ROM 0.  The host is Windows Server 2008 Standard x64, installed on Disk 0, running VMware Server 2.0.1.  The second hard disk has an existing installation of Windows XP Professional 32 bit, which I need to preserve.  If I shut off SATA 0 in BIOS, the machine boots into XP.  What I want to be able to do is to create a VM in Win Server 2009 that boots XP on that second physical (raw) hard disk.  I've created the VM, and am aware that I need to use a Passthrough SCSI Device.  However, the dropdown list only contains cdrom0.

I've disabled the drive letter, rebooted, still not in the list  I've set it offline, rebooted, still not in the list.  As a backdrop, I know this should be possible, because at one point I used to boot openSuse 11.1 from a USB portable drive, running VMware Server 2.0.1, and that same disk in the same position configured as a SCSI passthrough device.

I'm at my wits end here.  I've been breathing and eating this forum and Google search .... pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease help me?  What step(s) do I need to take to use this physical (raw) disk, to even get it to show up in the Passthrough SCSI Devices list for this VM?
