Permissions problem! I locked myself out of one of the images.

Greetings,

I did a bone-headed thing... I was expirementing with permissions and in one of my "test" images I added "Users role Read-Only on This object" but I didn't realize that as an "Administrator" I am also a user and that "deny" permissions supersede allow permissions. Now I have no way to go back and delete that permission on the users group! I'd happily just delete this VM from my inventory but it won't let me do that either.

How do I remove the permission or remove the VM from my inventory? This is very frustrating!

Thanks!

Vmware doesnt recognize key pressed after some time

I have installed vmware server 2 on a pc running ubuntu 8.04. The guest Os is a Windows xp pro with service pack 3 and vmware tools installed. I'm using ARCVIEW 3.2a virtualized in this machine. Keyboard is logitech (usb).

When I work in arcview I need to select some areas. To get this I have to have pressed the shift key and I add more areas slecting them with the mouse. Everything is OK but after some seconds (10, 20, it depends) arcview starts a new selection, even when I am still pressing the shift key. It's like after some time vmware did'nt recognize that the key is still pressed.

Arcview runs perfect on others XP's in real machines.

Vmware uses a buffer to store the key pressed? can I increase the size of that buffer?

want to dedicate a physical adapter to a VM, how is this done?

i've got a test network in place, want to dedicate a physical nic on a host to a vm so that i can do testing and not traverse my production network.

seems like there's only one "bridged" network, and i've got other vm's using that network, which gives them access to my production network, so i don't want to use that.  "nat" and "host only" don't seem to be the answer either.

can someone clarify if this can be done....

Command Line shutdown

Good morning,

I have a vmware server 2.0 that is running several test servers that we want to backup.  We want to shut them down, back them up and then start them up.  We are hoping that netbackup can run this script, but I will worry about that part later.  I was trying to use vmrun to do this but I always get this error.

Error: Malformed hostname parameter.  For the given service provider, the hostname must be a URL, in the form https://<hostname>:<port>/sdk

Then, I tried putting the https address in there and I get a cannot connect to host error.  I'm not sure if I have the right address or not.  Has anybody done this before?

Thanks for any help,

Tim

Since I have upgraded to;

Linux suse10.3 2.6.22.19-0.4-default #1 SMP 2009-08-14 02:09:16 +0200 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Everytime I reboot the server  it requires that I run /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl and recompile everything.  All appears to function correctly after the recompile and I don't receive any errors during the compile.

Why are there 32-bit processes on my Vista 64-bit installation?

$

Hoping someone can shed some light as to why, having installed VMWare Server on a host running Vista 64-bit Business, that the following all show up as 32-bit processes in Task Manager:

VMNat.exe

VMNetDCHP.exe

VMWare-AuthD.exe

WMWare-HostD.exe

The only VM* named process that is 64-bit appears to be VMWare-VMX.exe.

Thanks in advance,

David

I'm trying to get VMware Server v2.0.1 running on a new machine - Atom 330 CPU, Windows Embedded for Point of Service. (Basically, Windows XP SP3.)

I successfully used VMware Server v2.0.1 on a Celeron CPU with Windows XP Embedded (Windows XP SP2.) The exact VM I'm trying to use now works on that older computer running in VMware Player.

When I try to launch a VM, the resulting hostd log file contains:

There's no vmware.log file in the VM's directory. I have uninstalled VMware Server, cleaned up all left behind files, rebooted, reinstall, reconfigure, reboot, and the same thing still happens.

I'm at a loss on what else to try or how to diagnose the problem. The log offers nodetail about why the VM process fails.

How to set up port forwarding on a dedicated server running CentOS 5.4 to use Ubuntu 9.0.4

$

The basic situation that I have is a dedicated server running CentOS 5.4  At the moment I have one VM running Ubuntu 9.0.4. Later on, I will want to add another VM running Windows Server 2003 but at the moment I am focusing on getting Ubuntu up and running.

The Ubuntu installation is working fine but I'm seriously struggling to get port forwarding working so that I can access websites to be hosted on the Ubuntu VM. As a newbie to Linux, I am confused about the relationship between IPTables and VMWare's own port forwarding.

Here's what I've tried so far.

The IP of my server is xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and the provider support have told me that the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, the gateway address is xxx.xxx.xxx.1 and the network address is xxx.xxx.xxx.0. (Those latter two surprise me a bit, I expected private gateway/network address rather than public ones.)

First of all I tried Bridged Networking but had no success at all in communicating with the machine other than through the VMware console. I tried pinging it from the host (using ssh into the host) but no joy; also no Inernet access from the VM. I changed the interfaces configuration from DHCP to Static, using a static address of 192.168.1.100 and setting the gateway to xxx.xxx.xxx.1 as advised by the provider. No real difference, still cannot ping the guest from the host or vice versa and no Internet access from the guest.

Then I tried NAT. The host automatically set the IP address to 192.168.132.128 with a gateway of 192.168.132.2 Now the guest has Internet access out and when I do a VNC to the host and open Firefox with 192.168.132.128 I can see the hosted website okay but I still cannot get into it from outside.

I mentioned that I'm a bit confused about IPtables and VMware port forwarding, what I meant is that I'm not sure whether IPtable forwarding should be set to the IP address of the guest interface (192.168.132.128 in this case) or the gateway address 192.168.132.2 .

I have a feeling that I'm missing something very simple here, can anybody tell me what it is?

Intermittent network connection issues

$

I have VMWare Server installed on an HP ML350 G5 running Windows 2008 Server Enterprise 64-bit, with  28GB RAM and two 2.33Ghz Xeon processors.  This server is also the active domain controller, running DNS and DHCP roles.  Since the installation of VMWare, we have noticed intermittent network connection issues in which the host server and virtual servers will momentarily stop responding (a few seconds), and then return to working normally.  This is easily exemplified by running a ping -t against the host or vmware machines and notice that approximately every 5 - 10 minutes the ping will time out for a couple of requests, then return correctly.

Thinking the issue may be with the NIC, I updated all drivers and also introduced another NIC to the host machine and moved the VMWare machines to this new card.  I then noticed that traffic destined for the host on the original NIC (that no longer has traffic for VMWare), does not drop any ping requests.  But the second NIC, with VMWare, has the same problem with dropping the connection.  So the issue appears to only appear with VMWare utilizing the NIC.

I have run out of ideas to identify what is causing this problem and/or how to correct it.  This installation is in a production environment, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Converting Split Disk To Single File - Data Loss!

$

Hi,

Something pretty strange happened to us today. In order to migrate from VMWARE SERVER 2 to ESXi when needed to convert from growable virtual disks split in 2gb files to a single file. We used vmware-vdiskmanager -r source.vmdk -t 0 destination.vmdk. All the convertions went OK.

Once we start a virtual machine, we noticed some data missing. In fact, the content of the virtual mas 4 month old. We converted 10 virtual machines and that happened to us in 4 of them (2 on each server).

In order to reproduce the error, I copy  vmdk from a backup  to the server. I checked for current data and it was OK. I convert the disk but I keept the original. Once again the data was missing. I delete the disks, created new one and pointed to the OLD non-converted disks. The data was ALSO missing.

This was like the disk was not having the data writed to it or something like that. In the other hand, could this be a major bug in the conversion process? (not likely).

Any ideas what went wrong?

Regards

Hernán.

Quad Core host - disable or enable hyperthreading?

$
0
0

Dear all,

Thanks for taking the time.  New to the forum and to VMs.  I have read up as much as I can before posting but are not 100% sure of the answer to my question.  I know with old Intel processors, hyperthreading is recommended to be disabled.  On ESX with newer intels (nehalem and newer), the best practise recommends hyperthreading to be enabled.

However, this question is for the free VMware server, which only allows 2 vCPUs per VM.  My quad core xeon 3460 is showing 8 logical CPUs in task manager under windows 2003 R2.  This makes sense since it is 4 cores x 2 hyperthreads = 8 logical CPUs.  So now, if I run a VM and assigned 2 vCPUs to it, am I just using 1 physical core since hypertheading is enabled?  In other words, the 2 hyperthreads in 1 core counts as 2 logical cpus, which are then assigned as 2 vCPUs to the VM.  Is this how I should look at it?

On the other hand, if I disable hyperthreading, then the host will simply has 4 cores (translate to 4 logical cpus since no HT).  Then if I assign 2 vCPU to the same VM, would the VM be using 2 physical cores now?  Would this be more efficient ?

Recap:

option 1) Quad core, HT enabled = 8 logical CPUs.  Assign 2 to a single VM.  Using only 1 core physically.

option 2) Quad core, HT disabled = 4 logical CPUs.  Assign 2 to a single VM. Using 2 cores physically.

Which will give faster performance on the VM?  I am thinking option 2 since the VM will be using 2 cores physically, instead of 2 HTs on a single core in option 1.  Or am I just not looking at this properly?

Thank you again for your time.  Please shine some light to a newbie question.

Hi,

after a power failure, we have this issue on our vmware server..

We have installed 7 virtual machines, only 2 of them are now recognized and running.

for the other 5, we get an "configuration file cannot be found" error, and they are shown as

"Unknown (Inaccessible)"

"Unknown 1 (Inaccessible)"

"Unknown 2 (Inaccessible)"

"Unknown 3 (Inaccessible)"

"Unknown 4 (Inaccessible)"

instead of their proper names ...

Any suggestions ?

Problems running update to v7.1.4 within vmware Workstation

Hi,

I'm running Workstation 7.1.0 build 261024 on my Windows 7 machine. On startup I'm invited to upgrade to v7.1.4. However every time I do that I get no further than a "download pending... (2%)" message.

It seems odd that the message says "Downloading VMware Tools for Linux".

Has anybody else experienced this and do you have a solution? Many thanks.

VMtools 8.3.12 + Ubuntu 10.10 -- Install Problems

UBUNTU 10.10

Linux Kernel 2.6.35-31-generic-pae

Always used standard vmtools not open-vm-tools.

We have several ubuntu linux servers that are not upgrading properly after the last ESXi updates to the hosts prompted a new tools version. They worked fine with 8.3.7, but now when the installers run I get a GRUB error on reboot and the GUI is all scrambled. Some of the users need the GUI so that is why it is needed. Do you think this is a problem with initrd after tools compiles it?

I built a new server using the 10.10 iso image and did the new tools install [this new server never had the older version of tools on it - so this may be why it works] and it worked with the gui installed. Can anyone give advice as to why existing servers can't upgrade?

I have attached a photo of the GRUB error on reboot.

I have attached a photo of the GUI all squiggly -- probably because xorg is not working right.

I've tried uninstalling gnome-common, gnome-utils, gdm, ubuntu-desktop and fluxbox. When re-installed it results in the same squiggly gui.

Also during the vmtools install, Xorg complains about not being able to find vmwlegacy_drv.so, even when it is in the /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers folder.

I am running out of things to try. Does anyone have suggestions?

Hi all

Can anybody can help me with Windows 2012 64bit installation on the VMware ServerVersion 2.0.2Build 203138?

I'm trying to install Windows 2012 from ISO image called: 9200.16384.WIN8_RTM.120725-1247_X64FRE_SERVER_EVAL_EN-US-HRM_SSS_X64FREE_EN-US_DV5.ISO downloaded from MS

Installation begins but Windows 2012 hangs after few seconds with something like blue screen and

information: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

I searched web for solution but it is hard to find proper solution in this case.

Thanks in advance

I'm stuck since 2 days trying to have my Graphic card working in a Vmware host.

I'm starting my ubuntu in text mode.

I try to have OpenCL running in my VM. I tried a lot of various tutorials with ati-stream and so on and nothing works.

Then I followed [This][1]

After I did it I got this message at startup:

So, I know that the passthrough is working since I can see my graphic card in my host but I can't make it work right.

Can anyone help me? Ask me if you need more information!
