as appropriate user without entering username and password ?

(i want to simplify login to web interface of VMware Server 2)

The same question concerning shortcuts to virtual machines generated

on the desktop - I want to login to virtual machine through dekstop shortcut

pptp timeout on vm windows server 2008 r2

0
0

Hello,

on VMware Server 2.0.2 for Windows i have the following setup:

Host: Windows Server 2008 R2

VM: Windows Server 2008 R2

The VM has a bridged network adapter with its own public IP-Address connected to the internet and a VPN incoming connection is ready on the VM.

And here comes the problem:

The host CAN connect to the VM via VPN PPTP, but from outside a client computer cannot - it fails with a timeout.

In detail:

A client (e.g. Win7) trying to connect via VPN (PPTP) hangs at "Verifying user name password..." and after two minutes, the connections gets closed error 619. On the Host this failed connection is logged as Event ID 20252 "The user connected to port VPN3-127 has been disconnected because the authentication process did not complete within the required amount of time."

Other VPN models, e.g. SSTP work without a problem.

I have tried any setting with total firewall off etc. so from now on I assume a problem with the vmware virtual network adapter. It seems to fail to read the GRE- or PPTP Protocol.

Have some snapshots. Lost Based Image.

Hello everyone,

I had a vmware image running Solaris and hosting Oracle 11g.  The actual image ran inside vmware server on a Windows Server 2003 server.

I had two folders (one for Oracle 10g and another for Oracle 11g).  I only needed the Oracle 11g image, so I deleted the Oracle 10g image.

I didn't know this, but the Oracle 10g image was somehow the base image for the Oracle 11g.  The Oracle 11g folder only had the SNAPSHOTS.

I deleted the based image.  There is absolutely no way to retrieve it.  During system maintenance I broke the raid and reformatted the drives.  So, again, there is no way to recover the Oracle 10g base image.

Does anyone know how I could mount the snapshot files to see if there is anything left that I can extract?  It would be a small win, if I can at least mount the snapshot, and retrieve a database dump out of it.

Any ideas?  I tried vmware-mount (from some toolkit), but it didnt mount.  Perhaps because it was looking for the base image.

Thanks!

dmp files being created after uninstall

0
0

Hello,

I am not sure I am posting in the correct section but here goes.

We have a few servers that started running out of space on the C drive. After investigating we found that VMWare was still sending .dmp files every 5 minutes to the Default Users folder even though they had been converted to Hyper V long ago.

The servers are Windows Server2003, 64bit, SP2.

The only thing VMWare related item that I can still find on any of these servers is VMWare Tools. That service is disabled and the Tools software fails if I try to uninstall it.

I would like to remove/disable whatever is causing the dmp files to be created.

I am "assuming" it has something to do with the Tools but have not been able to figure much out by just Google searches.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

kernel 3.2 early excption 0d on vmware server and workstation

Hi all

I'm running debian lenny on vmware server 2 and all is working fine with my built kernel 2.6.35-14. I have built a new kernel 3.2.31 with quite the same options and it crashes on boot with an early exception 0d :

BIOS data check successful

Decompression Linux... Parsing ELF... done

Booting the kernel

PANIC: early exception 0d rip 10:ffffffff819b2547 error 0 cd2 0

The same behavior is occuring on vmware workstation but NOT on vmware ESXi...also, note that all is working fine on virtualbox and different physical servers.

after googling a lot, I have tried to pass the following options to kernel, but no change :

nosmep acpi=off

if it helps, I've been able to get different addresses of the exception (the 819b2547 is sometime different), but I don't remeber which parameters changed that.

Does anybody have an idea ?

thanks a lot

best regards

Julien

Workstation 9 and vmrun stop question

0

We're running a Windows Server 2012 and VMware Workstation 9.0.2 with 2 shared and 1 unshared VMs.

The shared VMs are on the C: and the other VM is on the D:

When I run "vmrun list" I get "Total running VMs: 1" which points to the unshared VM on D:

I take it vmrun does not see/recognize the shared VMs.

I'm trying to use "vmrun -T ws-shared stop" to shutdown one of the shared VMs but I'm not having any luck.

I've tried a number of different combinations but nothing has worked.  This is the command that I'm trying to work with:

vmrun -T ws-shared -h https://<hostname>:8333/sdk -u username -p password stop "[standard]Server/Server 2008.vmx"

The command fails with "Error: Failed to connect to host or proxy"

Can someone please guide me in the right direction as to the correct format of the command, and if I need to make any additional changes before this works.

Do I need to do anything in regards to the port number/sdk for example?

Thanks

Virtualising BIOS locked SBS2003 Server

I have in the past successfully used the VMWare Converter to convert Servers running OEM or retail versions of Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 r2 to VM's. I am now having a problem running running the VM I created using the VM converter on a Dell Poweredge 2800 Server and wonder if anyone has any advice. The Virtualised Server won't run without activating Windows and entering the license key doesn't activate the Server. On calling Microsoft they advise they cannot activate over the telephone and I must call Dell or purchase support hours for Microsoft to advise a resolution. I called Dell and the agent I spoke to was clueless about the issue and couldn't assist unless we purchase extended Dell warranty support which I don't want to do. After further investigation I believe that the reason for the software not activating is that the SBS 2003 OS supplied by Dell was a BIOS locked version. The reason I suspect the BIOS lock problem is because I've had one similar occurrence when trying to install a BIOS locked version of SBS 2003 supplied by Fujitsu with a new Fujitsu Server. The software would NOT install to a Virtual Machine running on VMWare Server (I cannot recall the exact error I got) however installed perfectly when installing directly to Fujtisu Server hardware. On calling Fujtisu the problem was escalated to a higher support team who advised there was a workaround however I never persued this. Any assistance with my Dell / SBS 2003 virtualisation would be appreciated.

USB webcams only recognized as audio device (Ubuntu 8.04 host system)

While it was possible to use USB webcams within vmware-server 1.x, the 2.0 version only detects them as audio devices. As an example a  plugged in Logitech Quickcam shows up as "Logitech Audio Device" in the virtual machine. Even these audio devices are unusable as I am getting the following error when I try to connect them: Remote USB device error: Remote device disconnected: an error occured while sending data. I guess the problem is that the cameras have no audio output and thus sending data would not work (Proper USB handling in Vmware would simply ignore the missing audio output instead of complaining, so I consider this as a bug too). I made sure that no other application was using the cameras and I even removed the associated kernel-modules for a test - did not work.

I tested this on several Ubuntu 8.04 "Hardy" installations with several webcams (Logitech, Philips): Always the same result, so I think this is a bug.

Does anybody has similar problems or a solution for this?

Hallo,

To start with on a test env, have installed active directory, openfiler and two vmware server on diffrent pc's. I managed to create a virtual machine on vmwareserver test1 with a iscsci connectvitiet to openfiler.

1. I am using webui to manage vmware servers. But i dont see my second vmware server test2 in my vmware serverr farm ( if i say good ). I need to manage it seperately. I tried to install vi client 3 with the same issue. How can i get both server managed with the vi client.

2. If the step one is achived is there by any means that i can use vmotion of that sort of stuff with vmware server ? just need to get hands on experience. Or should i take competely another steps to get it worked.

Expecting reply, thanks a ton in anticipation.

I am struggling here and really need help.I have Ubuntu 8.10 desktop installed and successfully installed VMware server 2.0. I built a Ubuntu guest VM and want to use my USB webcam in the VM but no matter what I try it doesn't work. Can someone tell me the specific steps in the host and in the guest to get a USB webcam working in a Ubuntu VM? It's a logitech 4000 webcam.

I've tried so many suggestions on these forums and the ubuntu forums to try and get it working and nothing has helped.

vmWare Host Agent (vmware-hostd.exe) service allways hangs at startup on Windows Server 2003

Machine is an IBM Blade Server Windows Enterprise Server 2003 32 bit

vmware Server 2 installation was successfull.

all other vmware services start and stop properly (DHCP, NAT, Authorization Service, Web Access.

Machine is:

Intel Xeon CPU E5430 @ 2.66, 8GB RAM 2 CPU's 4 Cores per CPU

Machine has a SAN (Qlogic Fibre Channel LSI Adapter 3000 series 4-port with 1064E -StorPort

Machine has 2 usb devices attached:

  TEAC FD-05PUB USB Device (FDD)

  HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8082N USB Device (DVD ROM)

Reading logs seems something related to SCSI Address... or maybe related do CDROM.

Allways hangs at same point.

Tested detaching usb devices and starting service, service hangs at the same point.

Any idea or advice apreciated. Thanks id advance.

VMware tools cause net to cut out at boot

Hello folks,

Might I say, I love VMware server 2.0, because vmware tools that fit into CentOS 5 make my day.  On the other hand, the tools don't seem to work as well with CentOS 4 anymore...

Here's my predicament: I have a CentOS 5 host with several virtual machines running slimmed down versions of CentOS 4.  Tools install just fine on my CentOS 5 guests, but when I install and configure tools on the CentOS 4 guests, it gives me a message about having to run the following:

/etc/init.d/networking stop

rmmod vmxnet

rmmod pcnet32

modprobe vmxnet

/etc/init.d/networking start

Which works.  The networking works after I do this, and stays up.  But, as soon as I reboot, there's NO net until I run those steps again.  One of the reasons I enjoy VMware server 2.0 is the slick options I have for starting my VMs in order, and this defeats the purpose.  Any tips?

Migrate ProxMox VMs to VMWare???

I see plenty of links talking about how to migrate VMWare VMs to ProxMox, but I haven't been able to find even one in the other direction!

Can anyone provide instructions for migrating a ProxMox VM to VMWare Server?

Win7/Srv2008 "Cannot execute scripts" Using shutdown vmwawre-vim-cmd

Hello All,

I'm having a troubling issue with the vmware-vim-cmd command on all my Windows 7 and Server 2008 machines.  I don't recall it being an issue in the past, but recently it has been.  Anytime I issue a vmware-vim-cmd power.shutdown command I will get an error message that the the guest cannot execute scripts and never shut down.  However, if I log into the guest and issue the exact same command it will shut down proplerly.  Also, for a undetermined period of time, I can issue the command to this same guest while not logged in.  It will shut down properly.  If it stays on for a few days this command will no longer work.

I installed VMware-server-2.0.0-116503 on Dell Inspiron 518 Quad Core Vista Home Premium back in October. It worked and I installed XP VM which also worked. I got distracted and just got back to it today and I can't get the Host Service to start. I uninstalled and reinstalled twice. Searched forums - can't find anything pertinent. Discovered a new build VMware-server-2.0.0-122956 so downloaded it, uninstalled rebooted, installed, rebooted and still no start.

Are there any wise souls out there?

Revert to Snapshot not working properly

Hello everyone

I've made a VM machine to make images on, to get as clean images as possible. And during this process I've taken alot of snapshots, and reverted, but now it seems that the reverting doesnt work. It doesn't put the machine back in the state it was, even though the server says its reverted.

Any suggestions on this?

Intermittent network connection issues

0
0

I have VMWare Server installed on an HP ML350 G5 running Windows 2008 Server Enterprise 64-bit, with  28GB RAM and two 2.33Ghz Xeon processors.  This server is also the active domain controller, running DNS and DHCP roles.  Since the installation of VMWare, we have noticed intermittent network connection issues in which the host server and virtual servers will momentarily stop responding (a few seconds), and then return to working normally.  This is easily exemplified by running a ping -t against the host or vmware machines and notice that approximately every 5 - 10 minutes the ping will time out for a couple of requests, then return correctly.

Thinking the issue may be with the NIC, I updated all drivers and also introduced another NIC to the host machine and moved the VMWare machines to this new card.  I then noticed that traffic destined for the host on the original NIC (that no longer has traffic for VMWare), does not drop any ping requests.  But the second NIC, with VMWare, has the same problem with dropping the connection.  So the issue appears to only appear with VMWare utilizing the NIC.

I have run out of ideas to identify what is causing this problem and/or how to correct it.  This installation is in a production environment, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
